Innovative Marine Aquariums

Totally nothing to with aquariums, just venting.

Please do not dispose of water bottles on airplane tarmacs. Some of would like our planes not to crash and burn mid air.

People are generally morons when it comes to water bottle trash it seems. They're pretty much everywhere - which is funny because most municipalities (in the United States) generate water clean enough to drink so it would seem that bottled water is more about convenience than actually drinking clean water.

And what's more convenient than tossing the bottle wherever you happen to finish it?

Which brings me to my main question - how does a piece of plastic trash make a plane crash?

Sucked into the engine. We had to taxi back so they could clean out engine. Planes are surprisingly easy to break.

I don't remember exact dates or plane models but:

-A airplane flying out from Egypt caught on fire and crashed because a tire was under inflated

- One blew up mid flight because of a bad splicing of wires

- Another blew up because a screw was missing the bolt and ripped into the fuel tank

- One fell apart in the air because the latch on the cargo door only closed 85% of the way

- One crashed because the wrong model of fuel gauge was installed (they both look identical and fit and work in the same slot, just one number difference)

This is why I hate flying.

How do water bottles get on the Tarmac? Is it by not recycling or something? I would hate to be the cause of a plane going down!!! Good luck flying!!!

The bottle was probably left by an airline employee, such as a baggage handler.

Most likely!

Most likely!

That sucks. Private pilot here flying 1960's Cherokees.... Something to be said for low tech- no fuel gauge working on those! ?

Haha. Just pray you don't run out a fuel :P

Here in Cda we have pretty clean water and one of the best filteration/plumbing systems- our water is safe to drink.

The majority of ppl are terrified of whats in our water thanks to media putting the fear in their heads, so the amount of plastic bottles clogging our garbage and recycling plants is ridiculous...especially since bottled water is just treated water, the same as tap. Its convenience and fear.

How a bottle can get on tarmac- some airports the passengers walk on the tarmac into the building thats one way, employees, or just garbage blown on to it.

I sometimes get the feeling aircraft were made of much sterner stuff and safer half a century ago, but that's just my opinion. :P

Those square windows tend to fail real quickly as they square corner severely compromise the integrity of the joints. They use to pop out all the time.

I'm a ramper out at the BOI airport and I'm in flight school training on my instrument right now.

As a ramper we are required to pick up any FOD (foreign object debris) on the ramp for that reason. Before each flight comes in we do a FOD walk at the gate to make sure it's clean. If it happened on the taxi way that's the responsibly of airport ops to make sure they are clear.

Sorry you got delayed from FOD intank. Luckily it happened during taxi and not on takeoff rollout, although the planes are made to fly on 1 engine.

That sucker looks like it weighs 3 times that of a 747 lol.. gonna drag you down quick when it fails lol

I find it surprising that some people on this forum would advocate for drinking tap water, while most likely would advise against putting it into their tanks. If tap water isn't good enough for our corals and fish, and is possibly harmful for them, why would it not be the same for any living creature?

Sorry, I realize this is completely off topic :P

I am amazed a water bottle could do such damage to a plane, crazy!

The DC-3 weighs less than 8 Metric Tons, a 747-8 has a maximum takeoff weight of 440 Metric Tons.... :P

haha youve ousted me! I know nothing of planes lol... That thing looks heavy tho haha

The only reason i don't use tap for my tank is due to the nutrient levels- i simply don't want additional algae.

I drink tap water all the time. I refuse to drink bottled water as it is standard water treated-just like tap water. So whats the point buying the same water and adding to the water bottle pollution?

The water here is very good but not good enough for reefs.

I would use the tap water and have for freshwater fish. I never had issues but wasn't willing to take the chance with corals as they are more susceptible to issues.

Hahaha! Good point. Honestly, treated tap water isn't harmful to use in aquariums - it's more for the nutrient content. Tap water contains higher nutrient levels which encourages nuisance algae.

Oddly enough, RO/DI water tastes like crap... Passing water through a carbon filter at that point actually improves taste. So that's ultimately the best solution (IMO) - pass your drinking water through a carbon & particulate filter. Then you're getting water that's safe, clean, and not bad tasting.

There are some areas where the water is unsafe to drink - and in those cases I can totally understand using bottled water, however, it's still probably more efficient and cheaper to just install a filter for drinking water.

Are you saying all bottled water is equal to tap water? I highly doubt that. I'm sure some of it is. But water from a spring is very different from the water coming out of my tap. Sometimes I can smell the chlorine! To each his own I guess. To me one of the benefits to this hobby is to get to drink RO/DI water :)

Pretty obvious why planes have have been build lighter... lighter=faster=less consumption of fuel. Engineering has also enabled the use of lesser material with better results than in the past; though, not in all applications... I have a few pieces of equipment at my manufacturing plant that net over 80,000 lbs, and like machinery these days weigh a lot less, with less structural integrity.

In the case of the plastic bottle ... Ill try not to throw any debris on the tarmac next time Im on one; which will most likely be never. Now if we only had a way to make birds aware of flight paths prior to them crossing paths with plane routes.

I also dislike the taste of ro/di and distilled.

Most water from certain brands is treated, most aren't buying the real spring water.

Bottled water is not the same as Tap are you insane??

Get a TDS meter on a bottle versus your tap and conversation over.

Most bottled water is RO filtered (not the highest quality RO of course).

The only way it would be close to tap water would be maybe if you had extremely clean water already or ran a well.
