Fish tank insurance

Do you guys have fish tank insurance? I discovered my my renters policy will not cover any damage caused by the fish tank specifically. So do you guys have insurance that would cover damage caused by the fish tank as well as insurance that would cover the cost of replacing everything in the fish tank?

Edit: My insurance policy also says it does not cover nuclear war. Just putting it out there.

Ive never really look at my homeowners policy but ive heard of some people who have had tank failures who have been able to file claims for the damage, but definitely not the livestock.

It actually does. Under Act of God clause. Just not nuclear explosions. Unless God causes them.

In that situation you probably wouldn't be around anymore to even make the claim, so why would it matter ?

I think you need to have it added as a "rider". Like you pay a bit more each month to cover it. Some policies put it under the same as a water bed.

I am looking into getting insurance for it myself.

I mean unless you are in a bunker of some sort and survive, your insurance company might not, also they might not want to go near you... you could be still glowing.

there are livestock policies.... and crop futures and insurance for that as well. does your mom and pop car insurance place have these, probably not.

you can literally get insurance for anything if you can find some company/[person to underwrite it. all your doing is legally betting them it doesnt happen. its all an odds game.

Your basic home insurance policy generally offers basic coverage for water damage from your aquarium. It covers the result of water damage, but not the source of the problem. For example, if your aquarium breaks, we cover the damage as the result of that breakage, but not the repair or replacement of the aquarium.

Your home insurance covers you if you have water damage as the result of:

  • Heating system rupture
  • Plumbing system rupture
  • Sprinkling system rupture
  • Air conditioning system rupture
  • Escape of water from a waterbed, aquarium or appliances
  • Escape of water from a public water main whether it occurs in or outside your home.

However, water damage can cost you a lot of money and headaches. To fully protect your home from water damage, you may wish to add additional coverage that is tailored to your needs.

Mine is covered smiley.gif Because we have lots of cyclones and a wet season, all our policies cover flooding and water damage etc. You just have to have the highest flood coverage. Had to advise the insurance company, and declare all my tanks and filters on contents insurance. That way damage by them breaking is covered under the house policy, and damage to the tanks is covered under contents.

Edit: Also, I don't know if it's the same there but here a couple of our larger insurers will negotiate on your policy and let you assist in writing up exactly what cover you want. Had a workmate that did it because she bought a block of land with these special old trees on it, then built a house there. They insured the trees. Something like 15k per tree.

So what i meant is that they would not cover damage resulting from the tank. If the tank breaks, i can absorb the cost of a lost aquarium. I'm just worried about the water damage.

I think it's gotta do with something with the someone trying to kill you with a nuke. Whereas the volcano just dont give a #### .

Pretty sure if anyone got hit with a nuclear explosion, they wouldn't be around to file the claim.....

Over here in the UK most contents insurance policies will cover water damage from a tank leaking/braking like they would if your washing machine dumped water everywhere.

Some policies will also automatically cover equipment such as the tank and filters.

However most policies for car and home/contents insurance have disclaimers that the don't pay out for damage or loss due to,

Acts of terrorism

War

Acts of god/natural disaster (over here most car policies won't payout if a tree falls on your parked car for example, not quite the same as volcano but I'm sure if that happened they'd use this loop hole to avoid paying lol)

Worryingly these are all broad enough for any insurer to potentially refuse to payout for any claim if they wished.
