Recommended Posts

Hi all,\

I am thinking about removing the hood from my JBJ 28 gal nanocube.

Looking for decent priced lights, preferably one that clips to the back of the tank and will help grow corals.

any suggestions?

I use a Kessil A160we over my 28G nanocube topless. It has served me well after about a year. Check out the growth of my corals in my thread. The shimmer is amazing.

If cost is an issue you might wanna check these out on sale for a limited time, I have never used them but I'm sure you should be able to find some info on them. They actually look identical to the lights an LFS I visit occasionally has over all his frag tanks.

Notice at the end they will not ship until 3rd week of June.

No problem, im really tempted to buy one as a backup for my jbj 28 in case my spensive light ever needs to be sent for repairs.

edit: 2:20 PM, just went back and bought one.

What are you going to keep in the 28 gallon?

If you want to keep SPS, nothing will be better for growth than metal halides.

We have a Memorial Day Special on Bimini Lights which clip on to the back of the tank and come with our new 20K lamp.

It will allow you to keep anything in your tank plus you wont have a problem with shadowing or a disco ball effect.

Not personally but I have heard the name a bunch, looking at the data sheets you can see that the PAR isn't really great for SPS at any depth and barely enough for zoa's at the lowest depth of the JBJ. If your only gonna keep LPS, softies, etc, and keep them high it looks like it would be OK. Look for some reviews as the spec sheets often don't reflect their true performance over peoples tanks.

Oh man there are so many options out there, it's really hard to say. I have seen people beat themselves up pretty hard trying to research and decide on lights, and you will find a million different opinions on them, some threads can get pretty hostile when lighting comes into the conversation. I currently only own a Radion G3 Pro but they are pricey and sounds like that end of the spectrum is out of consideration for you right now. The reef radiance I bought earlier looks at a glance to be a decent option but I can't be sure until I have tried it, they do have some good customer feedback on their site, but then again what seller posts negative things about their products. Some people would say wait and save for one of the higher end fixtures because you eventually want to get there and some people will say get a cheap Chinese fixture off of ebay and you'll be great. Not having more experience with the others the only positive recommendation I can make at this time is the radion because it is what I use every day. Sorry I can't give more but i just dont wanna point you in the wrong direction. Read, read, research, and most important (IMO) go look at pictures of people's tanks that have been using the light you are considering (hopefully long term).

you've been helpful, I appreciate it!

You're right, there's so many options out there, I am tearing my hair out trying to figure out whats best for me. I am so confused between T5, MH, LEDs.. reading the charts is reading greek to me.. wattage, lumins.. pars, oh my!

Speaking of Pars.. I have a PAR 38 bulb from my 9 gal nano which was amazing. Think if I get a second one, it'll be good?

Those PAR 38 bulbs are really popular and alot of people really like them, I think two of them could make some things grow in your bigger tank. Just do your research and figure out how deep the lights give good PAR and the spread of light. Keep your corals in the zones they need to be for the bulbs and you should be good. If you find they only give good PAR at a shallow depth you may want to have a high aquascape to keep SPS in the sweet spot. As long as a light puts out the right spectrum and PAR at a known depth we can work around it's limitations within reason.

There are quite a few options available and affordable ones.

Par38 - these bulbs are great. They don't have the reputation like some fixtures but if you get a good bulb, they are very strong. I have a cheapy version bulb and the growth in my tank has been good. If I had gone with a better bulb, I wouldn't need to upgrade.

If you go with a par38- these screw into any lamp/light fixture, choose one that has 80-90 degree optics, dimmable, and full spectrum.

Rapid led has a good par38

Coral compulsion has a 35 watt full spectrum dimmable bulb with a spread of 24x24(they have a lot of options)

Chinese box like Evergrow or Mars Aqua - a lot of ppl use these and have had great experiences

Aquamaxx

Micmol

Ai

Marine orbit- i've heard good things but not sure regarding sps.

Check out videos of reviews on youtube. It also gives you an idea of what each light will look like and what others are keeping under them.
