GFCI and Surge Protector

I am looking to put up a GFCI with an inbuilt surge protector. Ideally I should install a GFCI Outlet and add a surge protector power strip. However, I live in an apt and I really cannot go ahead and replace outlets.

I am looking to use this : http://www.homedepot.com/p/Tower-Manufacturing-Corporation-GFCI-5-Outlet-Adapter-30339015-13/202510243

This say as 'Shock Buster' not really sure if this also has a surge protector.

Other one is : http://www.amazon.com/TRC-90033-Shockshield-Portable-Protection/dp/B000XVG72G

and then add a surge protector after that..

Any electrical experts with suggestions...

I live in an apartment too and no you simply can't just change the sockets out. Its against most leases and if anything happens-you are liable.

You can purchase gfci adapters. You simply plug it into the socket and then plug the powerbar into the adapter.

They sell the adaptors at home depot.

Depending on your situation, I am very against GFCI for aquariums. I am out of town most weekends, so if it trips, everything is dead. I prefer to setup all my electrical in custom cabinets. All cords come in the bottom and all components are mounted at the top. I also put false walls in to mount everything too. While this will not deal with stray voltage it eliminates any potential for water in an electrical socket.

The thing you really need to consider is do you plan to be away much. 4 hours is a standard stocked tank any you will probably be fine. But to more time goes by, the more you risk losses.

The only way I will ever consider GFCI is if I can control and monitor it via the web so that I can remotely reset it.

I picked some up at home depot, then I plugged a surge protector into the GFCI. Been running that way for 6 years, no problems.

I have never had it trip when I was out of town or at random, it tripped when my heater was broken and when I splashed water on it.

Ofc I don't worry about random tripping either because my MP10 has a battery backup and the tank will be fine with just flow.

If the gfci is tripping regularly, theres a problem that needs investigating. Constant tripping is what its supposed to do when there is an issue. It shouldn't trip if all is well.

Ex. My washrm gfci outlet started tripping-regularly. There was a problem with the wiring in the wall, had it not tripped, someone could have been seriously hurt.
