What's the deal with lack of Clams these days

So 20 years ago I remember an abundance of clams in most local stores I would walk into. You would find a variety of clams from 4-7 inches which I assume were mostly wild caught. With the shift in laws and preservation of wildlife thinking that the industry moved towards with "cultured clams", it seems there is still a shortage of supply and variety that there once was. I constantly visit the go-to websites and they always seem to be out of clams or a very limited quantity of only croceas or maximas and you would be lucky to find anything over 2.5 inches. So my question is..with all these large "culture farms" in the Pacific region..why is there still such a limited selection of awesome and varied clams? I have worked hard the last 20 years and can finally afford to buy what I want...and I can't find a huge awesome clam to save my life. lol, I'm just not in the mood for a 2 inch clam that has a limited chance of survival. Thoughts?

Also, the stores where I live really never have clams. They may have a few in their display tanks not for sale...and they are usually the bigger ones I'm sure the supplier may have. Makes me wanna just open up my own clam shop one day.

I've wondered the same thing. I don't think there is a short supply at all anymore. I've seen a lack of popularity of them while I was searching for one. Liveaquaria.com has really awesome clams in their divers den wysiwyg. However, they're normally smaller. I wouldn't say a 2 inch clam has a limited chance of survival. From what I've read that is somewhat of a myth, and many people here and on other forums have kept them quite nicely without the need to ever feed them. I've got a (approx) 2 and 1/2 inch derasa that is doing great (knock on wood). As long as they're aqua cultured and not taken out of the wild I think their mortality rates a pretty good.

People are all about paying crazy high prices for booger sized fancy named pieces of coral so LFS's have started fragging the clams and selling thosefor the same price as the big ones should have been priced

"I broke my clam into two, want to buy 1/2 the shell? Still has some flesh attached!"

Well at least in Canada, it is the dollar that has a huge effect... So for a maxima that would cost $80, now it has to be sole for $120 so no one wants to drop that much on a clam.

Ohhh..you crazy kids! Well we have been considering a move to florida ...so maybe that will be my ticket to the ultimate clam tank...giggity!

Harry Potter...once again those are amazing clams in the link you sent but still under 3 inches. I'm just not understanding where all the Large Clams have gone. Maybe they should feel comfortable with their curves..just like Kim K. ;)

Sometimes pacific east aquaculture will offer wild caught clams ranging from 4-6" for the price your going to pay for a smaller farmed one.
