Yasha goby homicide

So about a month ago I bought a yasha goby, it never came out but I would constantly see his face in the burrow he built. A week ago I bought a pistol shrimp, and put him in the same hole for them to pair up.

I have yet to see either of them come out but I've seen the pistol shrimp making burrows and see his claws at the base of them. so today I lifted the rock up and I could only find the pistol shrimp. I can't find the yasha goby anywhere. I've also lifted up the other rocks in my tank (fusion 20) Would it be possible that the pistol shrimp killed my yasha?

possible. more likely you have some yasha jerky somewhere on your floor.

I agree with this. Happened to mine years ago : ( Sneaky little jumpers.

I have a screen top on the tank. The stock one that comes with the fusion 20. So there is a small crack there, but I've checked the floor all around the tank and I can't find him.

I would suspect it is highly unlikely that the shrimp killed the Yasha. But if it died it might have eaten it. What kind of shrimp is it?

You haven't seen the fish for a week? I'm guessing the clean up crew cleaned up.

Similar thing happened to a firefish I had. Disappeared, after about a week I started looking for it. Not on the floor, not under the rocks...I think my clean up crew got it.

Thanks for the comments guys. The shrimp I have is a pistol shrimp, so they should be paring up and not killing each other.

Today when I was cleaning the tank I decided to take out my intank media filters and clean them inside and out. While the baskets were out I decided to take a flashlight and check the chambers just in case. Turns out that the yasha goby was just chilling, alive, in the number 1 left chamber.

I got super lucky that he landed into the filter compartment after his jump. Fusion 20 tank owners beware, fish can and will miraculously find the 1/4 gap between the screen and glass.

I fished him out and put him back into the display. I hope he finds the pistol soon.

Note that not all pistol shrimp pair with gobies - and vice versa. What kind of pistol shrimp is it? Some of the larger ones can be pretty aggressive. Also they have horrible eyesight so sometimes unintended encounters can happen.

Glad you found the goby! I've learned that you always check overflows, etc before giving up hope. Kudos to you for being persistent and doing your maintenance ;) A yasha would be a crappy fish to lose.

Glad you found him alive.

The same thing happened to me with my fusion 10, which also has that gap. The first time it happened the goby was alive in the rear chambers. The second time it jumped, it wasnt so luck. Found him all shriveled up near the tank.

I would suggest investing in a better lid. Now I have a lid made by a member of this forum named Smiz. Best money I spent. No gaps at all and impossible for the smallest fish to get out.

I have the candy cane pistol shrimp, so pairing will just come down to their personalities.

Glad you found him alive.

do you have a link to hid lids?

I don't really want to find my 35 dollar randalls dead on the ground.

I think he has a thread. Just search "Smiz Lids" it should come up. If not, just send him a pm. Im on my phone right now so its not that easy to look stuff up. They arent cheap, but they function perfectly and look very nice.

thanks, I checked them out. Pretty sweet looking but at more than half the cost of a new tank ill have to pass.

So I have still yet to see my yasha coming out of his burrow. I lifted up the rock the other day to see if he was still there and he is, with the pistol shrimp. When I feed the tank I often squirt some mysis or pellets down their burrow so they don't starve to death.

My question is...

If I want them to come out, should I stop giving them food into their home? Will they come out on their own to find food?

Ive had them for about 2 months now and I have yet to see them come out and chill outside their home.

Thanks everyone

Yes.

My Yasha female will get her fill and then drop food off to her mate and the shrimp. As for frequency of seeing them. Mine have been reclusive for about a week now. Before that the female was almost always out of the burrow.

that would be so nice to see them everyday outside their burrow. I don't know if thats the norm or you just got lucky!

That was a great video. How super cute!! Do only the females do this?

No clue. I had the female first and she has always fed the shrimp. When I got the male, she started feeding him too. The female is larger and spends more time out of the burrow than the male.

This is an older picture of my pair. The one in the back is the male. You can't see it well in this picture but in addition to the black spot on the dorsal fin he's also got dark splotches on his pectoral fins that the female doesn't have. Though the last time I saw both of them (about a week ago now) all of their red markings have darkened to nearly black. They have spawned at least once that I have seen. The larvae hatch at night and swim up to the lights when they come on. I am not usually up before sunrise so I may have missed many spawns.
