Hello everyone so just for starters I have a nuvo 20 that has been successful for the past year. I am not new to the hobby by any means... well about 6 years to be exact. I bought a oceanic biocube when I was 18 and I guess Im looking for something a bit more advanced. Last year I purchased a Nuvo aquarium and well it was kind of a just to get my feet wet again type of situation. Today is my birthday yet again and well I wanted something for myself... and i have decided for it to be an aquarium. So If you guys could help me make a choice tonight that would be great, I am trying to upgrade to a bigger system that will give me a bit more wiggle room for equipment.

So if you had to choose would you go with

Reefer 170 or Max C 130 and why?

Would you recommend something else in that price range?

Thank you all for you time and input in advance

aaaahh sheeeeet happy b day! Great way to treat your self!

I vote Reefer 170. I am not a fan of canopies and I like open top tanks. They look so much more clean. Also they help with temperature control in the hotter months. If you wanted to go bigger for even cheaper check this out http://www.amazon.com/CAD-Lights-Gallon-Versa-Aquarium/dp/B011SL48CU/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1462290140&sr=8-2&keywords=sca+aquarium

There are stories but there also many success stories. I'm just saying. 700 bucks for a 50g ready to go is not bad. BUT you will not be disappointed with a red sea either. Still would choose the reefer over cmax.

SCA is quality. Also this comes with a skimmer and I love my SCA303! Pulls mad gunk out.

Its nice but that red sea 170 has caught my eye not going to lie... Anyhow what do you think of the reef octopus classic 152-s protein skimmer to go inside the sump? You think it's overkill?

Happy Birthday! Great Gift:)

Hey Clown thank you :) it was a fun little birthday. Im kinda paranoid my six line is going to jump out haha. Ill see if i can make a mesh top for it like the nuvos have.

Happy Birthday!

My birthday is Saturday and I will be setting up my new Reefer 170. So, you can guess the tank I would recommend. :)

I have put together the stand and water tested the tank/ sump. I am impressed with the quality so far.

Check out Lawn's thread on his 170. He has had his running for quite a while.

Thank you Pancetta happy early birthday to you my friend wish you all the best and many more in years to come. Awesome suggestion I think we might end up reefer 170 buddies haha. Have you decided on a skimmer yet? I want that reef octopus 152-s its so pretty looks like a red NYOS hahah hopefully it isn't overkill.

Happy Birthday!!

Hammerstone thank you means a lot to me. Really does :) Happy Reefing haha.

mmmm maybe. Granted you could have it on for 12hrs a day only. however if you went smaller there would be no problem

Yeah Ive seen people run bubble magus skimmers successfully but others say its too much. I think i saw vivd aquariums use a bubble magus too. I really don't know the thing i hated about my nuvo was the ghost skimmer that thing sucked so hard man, like you wouldn't believe. So I want to make sure I get this right you know.

the coral box skimmers have good reviews along with skims, ice caps, and simplicity skimmers also. all dc and controllable

Johnnyvega,

Thanks! I looked at a lot of these skimmers. I saw the Bubble Magus Curve 5 at Vivid and it was very quiet.

I ended up buying the Nyos Quantum 120. It is my first skimmer and I wanted one that would not require a lot of fuss.

Hopefully it will live up to it's rep.

I would love a bday gift like this...need the lottery:)

You can get the mesh top kit at BRS, everyone says these are the best. You can buy the clips to support the mesh top like the Nuvo's on ebay for like $3.00.

I got new clips on ebay for my nuvo- I actually like them better than the originals

Thanks. I got a good deal on the tank so I splurged on the skimmer. My first skimmer. Still not entirely sure how the damn thing works?!

I will check out your build thread.
