Picotope Planning

I've had an empty pictope around for years gathering dust and I've finally decided to get it going for real. I had it cycling years ago, but nothing ever really came of it and I never got around to stocking it so I took it down and it went into storage.

For lighting I have a 36w (2x18w) power compact fixture.

Filtration will be an "over-sized" upflow algal turf scrubber. The mesh will measure 6"x5" and ideally will allow me to feed fairly heavily.

Water motion will be provided by a Hydor PICO Evo-Mag.

Heater will likely be a 25w Cobalt neo-therm since setting the rest of this up will cost me next to nothing and it looks pretty slick.

My goals for the tank are simply to see if I can simply maintain a small reef using just an ATS, light, a heater, and water movement. It wouldn't surprise me if I ended up running carbon at some point, but I'll burn that bridge when I cross it. I want to challenge myself to aquascape this tank artistically and focus on a just a handful of interesting inhabitants with simple needs.

Built the algae filter today and ordered the pico evo-mag today. Now I just play the waiting game...

Once it gets here, I'll be ready to add rock, sand, and water.

Plenty of live rock and live sand. I'll either go with some sexy shrimp or peppermint shrimp. Curly cue or rock flower anemones. Seems like I will inevitably upgrade the lighting on this setup. Other than that, probably plenty of softies and some lps. Some ricordia mushrooms seem likely as well. Haven't had any in ages. I'm really interested to see how this sort of filtration performs. I'm hoping a 23w daylight cfl bulb is enough to grow a decent turn of algae on the filter. We shall see.
