phosguard amount

How much phosguard should I use in my Nano? I have a 100ml bag and it says for 60g. I could divide it by thirds if that would work, I just don't want to shock system. I have sps, lps, and zoas. I would like to run it continuously so I don't have to mess around with drying it and putting back. I can just replace when used.

I'd start with a quarter of the recommended amount, as you don't want to drop the phosphate level too quickly. I like to mix it in a media bag with a little activated carbon. I find that using less, and replacing it more frequently often works best.

It's important to monitor the phosphate level when using Phosguard. You can adjust the amount and frequency that you change it as needed. The target range (when your tank isn't experiencing any algae or cyano blooms) should be 0.01 to 0.03 ppm.

Note, phosphate is an important nutrient in our reef tanks; undetectable levels (without algae blooms) is bad for coral health.

Phosguard is really quick at picking up your phosphate unlike gfo so it can shock your system. Like seabass said, start low and test to see how much you need when you have to swap it.

I decided to use it because of a cyano bloom the tank is almost 6 months old and already went through the first algae/diatom phase in the beginning. I went ahead and did a third of the bag it came with. It was about 3T that I used in media bag it came in saved rest in ziploc. Today came home from work and clown has ich. WTF! Did 5g water change and carefully siphoned slime with turkey baster. Did I shock fish? Corals seem fine. Anemone has swelled bigger than before and looking really good Although still not rose like it was before I got it from lfs tank. More peachy and green than red rosey. Psudochromis looks fine, no "salty ich" what gives?

Stress obviously doesn't cause Ich, but it can make a fish more susceptible to it. If it is Ich, your tank was infected prior to this event. Also, if it's Ich, your pseudochromis is also at risk.

I would guess that the toxins from the cyano caused more stress than reducing the level of phosphate. I would manually remove as much of the cyano as possible.
