M8 a Megaladon shark is the best option for a beginner, can live happily in a 1 gallon vase so I'm sure it can live in a 10 gallon happily. You only need to feed it one cube of mysis shrimp weekly.

Get some mushrooms to start out and ad more coral so time goes but 10gallon and fish is not a beginner thing.

thats nonsense lol plenty of 10 gallon nano beginner fish that don't take a lot of effort

is your cycle done? But I would get a firefish or clownfish for your first fish, both are hardy and accept just about any food

Ye man, a Megaladon would do soooo well in your new 40 gallon. It would have sooo much space!

Thanks. I was planning to add 2 or 3 fish and add a hanging filter to my set up. Im looking to get a maroon clown and go from there I suppose...

I would say a maroon clown is too big for a 10. They tend to be larger. I'd go with a smaller type clown. Also, two fish at MOST with a 10, especially if you're going with a clown. Salt is much different than fresh water in terms of fish stocking.

Also, if you just started your tank last Friday, I think you added the hermits, snails and starfish too early personally. The tank needs to cycle and the clean up crew you have will need to eat something. With no algae yet, they most likely will starve unless you are supplementing feedings.

And welcome to NR! There's a lot of information available on this forum! If you do some searching, you'll find a wealth of info to help you out. And everyone is very helpful as well.

And my one piece of advice: research the heck out of everything before adding to your tank. This goes for fish, corals, inverts, additives, food, etc. :) Researching I'm sure has saved me from uncertain disaster in this hobby - and not researching has caused me headaches for sure :)

I started this tank on 4/15 transferred everything over from another tank that had been going for approx a week and a half. And yeah I've been trying to do research and talk with my local fish shop. I've been getting a lot of contradicting info, just trying to toss my ideas out before moving forward

good to hear on the research! there will always be a ton of contradicting info - there's always never just one way to do something. The key is weeding through, weighing the facts and then making an educated decision.

I still think you may have problems with your hermits, snails and star. Even a week and a half isn't enough time in my opinion. Have you been checking to see if the tank cycled? Have you seen an ammonia spike and/or what are your ammonia and nitrate levels? Are you feeding the inhabitants? If you transferred over from a tank that had been up a week and a half, most likely unless you used seeded rock/sand/etc., there wasn't a biofilter that they transferred with.

I Totally couldn't agree more with what Stella has said.

As I am currently in the process of looking to add some Coral to our Tank. And I am researching the heck out of the Coral(s) that look good in Pictures, but, I am cautious as to the Coral's Aggressiveness, I'd rather not get a Coral than to get 1 and later regret losing a Coral due to "War Fare".

Also Research the "Fish" u want. Clowns can be aggressive and some will tell you to put a Clown in Last, as it won't be "Dominant".

Regarding a Cycle, Get ur self a Good Test kit! I am not an expert on cycles or Cycling, but I did wait. I Used Live Rock (LR) and Live Sand (LS). Got LR from LFS and used 15 or 20 Gallons of their water, directly from their Tanks. My cycle was about 10 days, this is an exception, not the norm.

During ur cycle, u will want to do water changes along the way.

I Hope ur Clean up crew can survive a cycle. Ammonia can be very harsh to any critter.

I Am Glad U found us (NR) and listen to people's advice :)

Most of all.... :welcome: To NR! and we are most definitely picture Hounds!! We Love  Pics!! :PB)

Enjoy the ride :)

yo water changes and light feeding is all you need. No skimmer on my build! However yes maybe take like 5 hermits back hahah no need for that many. As for fish you could do a clown fish pair or firefish pair. A really great small beginner fish is a clown goby also. Another good one with lots of color is a royal gramma. Keep us posted! also we like pictures here :)

that always makes me laugh lol. I just call mine Occys. That and Bob and Bill, even though they are a breeding pair. The female I had for a year and a half alone so she was a he and then turned into a female but the name stuck. Now that she has her little man I named him Bill lol.???

Also welcome!!!?

Hey welcome to reefing! I've been in the hobby for 8 months now and I started with a 10 gallon nano tank,it can be done trust me.my biggest advise would be keep up with a 10% to 20%water change weekly, don't skip!I've found that the 20% water changes work the best for me.I have two fish and I wouldn't do more than that,I have a clownfish, and a yellow watchman goby, and since they occupy two different parts of the tank there seem to be no compatibility issues.over stocking and poor husbandry are two main reasons nano tanks have issues.get a good testing kit not api.as long as you just have soft corals dosing your tank shouldn't be necessary with weekly water changes.research everything and get lots of input from people on here and youtube videos are great for research, but some people give bad advise so get a few opinions on something then research more and you'll have to make a hypothesis based on the info you get.this hobby can be frustrating but very rewarding.most of all ENJOY the hobby it's addicting,I just started a coralife biocube 14 gallon for my wife.she had no interest in my tank at first, but now she has her own.lol good luck!!

Yeah I agree with flower moma, some lfs will think about profit over sound advise.I have learned a lot on here, and talking to other customers in the lfs while shopping.I have one lfs that has an employee that will say anything to Sell something, needless to say I dont ask her questions anymore, lol but everyone else at the store are pretty good.

HI! Welcome and StellaBlue is always my favorite advice friend ;-) Also Rural and Astinus are amazing! Thing is.. I learned about housing a star in the first few months and it didn't do well. Looking back I wish I would have had this forum before purchasing. Any star should not be paired with a CUC for set up. Quite honestly your tank is probably not large enough/stable enough to handle such a delicate creature. Hopefully it will fare well but please know it might not.

I hope it goes well for you! Keep us posted.... and laugh at the joke comments- It is always in jest - Know you are a welcome addition!!

Mine is doing AMAZING in my 29G. I keep thinking maybe he wants more room.. but then he shakes his head at me, jumps up to give a quick hug and assures me all is perfect! Such a doll!

Yellow watchman goby are pretty bulletproof and do well in small tanks as they really dont swim much. You cant go wrong with Ocellaris clowns. With proper maintenance you could definitely keep a few fish in a 10 gallon.
