AlejandroDelRey
Got this rainbow BTA today from Legendary Corals and I couldn't be happier with the service :-) I want to feed it once a week so can I feed it the frozen mysis shrimp I use for my fish, or would it be more beneficial to feed it stuff from the super market?? Also, how can I get my cleaner shrimp to leave it alone? He kept walking all over it and bothering it today Link to comment
pgrVII
What a gorgeous nem! Congratulations Yes,frozen mysis is just fine. You can even feed it flake or pellet food if you wanted too. They don't need fed often really, but 1x a week won't hurt it. Don't worry if it shrinks up for a bit or hides while it adjusts to your tank and lights etc. Just leave it be and it'll move if it needs too. If you see brown coming from its mouth it's just poop usually. No worries and enjoy! Link to comment

But anyways, thanks for the advice! Link to comment

AlejandroDelRey
While it's moving around turn off your power head. All night? I cut out filter pads and put them over all the intakes just for precaution. Sorry for all the questions Link to comment

You can do that for sure but they can find their way around a filter pad, they're a sack of water after all a cut up nem can nuke a smaller tank fast if it dies. Link to comment
AlejandroDelRey
I just checked my tank and my female tank bred clownfish is being hosted by the nem!! :haha: The thing is, the clownfish is almost as big as the anemone, and i don't want it to smother the BTA to death. Will my nem be ok? Link to comment

pgrVII
I've done this.... I'm just lucky my clowns get really displaced in the tank if there isn't a nem. Link to comment

AlejandroDelRey
Sorry to bump the thread, but I've got a concern I guess. I've had my nem now for about a month and it's colors are nothing like they were when I first got it. Here's what it looks like now, brownish and kinda dull. It doesn't even glow any more under the blues Is this bad? It's still firmly attached and it's mouth is tightly closed. It's just the colors that've changed Link to comment

Squared
what kind of lighting do you have? with corals it's usually browner=needs more light Don't know much about nems but I really want one. Hope you can get it too color up again Link to comment
HarryPotter
Looks like textbook case of insufficient lighting IMO Link to comment
AlejandroDelRey
I have Dave's Nano Box. I ramped the lights up to 60% and fed it some shrimp and it ended up coloring back up about 5 days after I posted the pics! But now I'm having trouble with it again.... It shrivels up for most of the light period, but expands at night. TOO much light?? This has been going on for about the past 5 or 6 days. I took that last picture just a couple of minutes ago, about an hour after the moonlight kicked in. So is it just getting too much light or is it dying?? It's foot is still firmly attached, and it was sticky when I fed it three days ago. It's mouth goes from being puckered up tightly to slightly open (not gaping). Also, my female clown keeps biting tentacles off... She bit off three today This thing's making me pull my hair out lol. Link to comment

You gotta make LED lighting adjustments slowly, lots of people do like 1% every two weeks. Link to comment

Oh sh*t lol, I did way over 1% I did turn the levels back down earlier, so I'll see how the nem reacts to the lower intensity. What about the whole losing tentacles thing though? I know clowns do this to gain "immunity", but that's a lot of tentacles she's bit off... Link to comment

I think over 1% isn't a hard rule but it pays to be cautious in this game. You'll see it said that good things happen slow and bad things happen fast in this hobby. I was ramping my lights up 5% a week and burned the crap out of a couple of corals myself so I turned them back down and started following the a 1% per bi-weekly schedule which has allowed me to find a good spot for my newer corals with out overdoing it. If your only 1% higher than they can tolerate the effect will be a lot less drastic and should be able to to be reversed rather easily. The tentacles im not sure about, i don't know a whole lot about nems. I would assume the ones the clown have bit off were already dead, the clown may be trying to "groom" or do maintenance on its home. I'm pretty sure that the tentacles will grow back if you can get the rest of the nem back in good health. Have you tried feeding it lately? If it eats that is a good sign but it may take a few days to come out of it if it did indeed get shocked badly by the lighting change. Be patient, make small changes and watch for results. Not sure how long you have been at it but almost everybody has made a mistake and killed something in their tank at some point. Hope your nem recovers, but if it doesn't don't panic or quit, just learn from it and then the next time you will have a much better chance. Link to comment
phillyclownfish
IMO it looks from lack of lighting as long as the water params are good. I rescued a nem from another hobbyists a little while ago and it went the farthest away from my radion xr30 that it could of possible done. The photos above seem to picture the process of how mine died. However my two other rbta are healthy under the radion....Hope this helps. Link to comment

Only been in the hobby for 10/11 months now. I fed it yesterday, and it did accept the food without spitting it back out, so hopefully that's a good thing. The photos above seem to picture the process of how mine died. Well that's reassuring LOL Link to comment
