bashment
Hello everyone. I've had this Maxima for about a month and a half. One half of the mantle extends fully, however the other half of the mantle seems to remain somewhat retracted. I've researched and it doesn't look like pinched mantle. I've been checking at night and haven't been able to visualize any pyramid snails either. Unfortunately, i did not place a rock beneath the clam. With a shallow sandbed, the clam has attached it's basal foot to the bottom glass of the tank, so I am unable to take the clam outside the tank for a more thorough look. The clam retracts quickly when I run a shadow over it. As far as lighting, I have a Maxspect razor 420r 120w 16k, that at peak runs at 55% white and 100% blue for 4 hours. Water Params are stable. I really don't want my clam to die. Open to any suggestions. Link to comment

william_payne1
It may be pinched mantle as they all look different, but you're right it does not look like it. if it is and your able to find a way to get it to release its foot safely there is a way to fix it. I found an article on it here: http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2006-09/jf/index.php Link to comment
bashment
give us more info, source of clam, tank params, how old is the tank, other livestock and such Clam was just from my LFS. As far as tank Params, I keep my salinity at 1.026-1.027, phosphates 0, nitrates can hover depending on how heavy I'm feeding from 5-15. Temp is steady at 79 degrees. Tank has been up for almost 4 months. I have two clowns and recently added a Midas Blenny. As for my inverts, I have an RBTA, RFA, peppermint shrimp and Astrea, Cerith, Nassarius, and Nerite snails in tank as well. I recently rid my tank of my hermits. Link to comment

Clam is still doing the same. Maybe slightly better. I may have to detach the clam and do a deeper examination. Link to comment

tetraodon
i wouldnt worry too much, usually if something like PM is happening it will curl its mantle up then in. Link to comment
IronChefItaly
It is extremely important to not try and move the clam at this point - especially if you're not certain there is an issue. My clam does the same thing when my powerhead cycles to max and the current gets a little strong against his one side - then he'll tuck it closer. Try and redirect the flow or turn it down for half a day to see if this will make any difference. In any case, I wouldn't do anything as drastic as trying to detach it. Few other things to look for is new growth and any instability. If you don't have an auto top off get one to avoid changes in salinity. Watch your thermometer for an entire day (pick a colder or warmer day) to make sure there is no more than a 3 degree fluctuation. Keep alk and calcium up. Link to comment
