william_payne1
So I have had this Aqueon evolve 8 for a few years and I have used it for mostly as a quarantine tank or to hold corals while breaking down larger tanks, it's been a nano reef a couple times, now a corner piece in my office. Filtration will be live rock and carbon, bare bottom. I intend to run an MP-10 with a par 38 bulb type led for lighting. Although this may change as I have never used this kind of lighting before. I mostly use metal halide or other larger LED systems but I still have another room of storage to go through to find my LEDs and mp-10's and I need a light! so I bought one. Still have to wait to find the mp-10's my pockets aren't that deep to just buy another lol. In the meantime I am going to do a few mods to this tank and add a second pump and see how that goes it may suffice, only time will tell. It's been running 5 days Ammonia 0ppm, Nitrites 0ppm, Nitrates 20ppm, temp 79° starting to see diatoms and a bit of green! But only where I have flow, time to get started on that second pump... william_payne1
OK so today I decided to break up some of the larger pieces of live rock and continue to let them cycle. I'm not that concerned about what it looks like right now as long as it cycles, I can rearrange later. I pulled the pump and replaced it with one that has twice the flow at least and hid the original behind the rocks for now... Must... Find... MP-10! These goofy things are loud! Light should be here today or tomorrow, relying on sunlight atm. Parameters after breaking up live rock: NH3/NH4+ 0.25ppm, NO2- 0ppm, NO3- 80ppm Temp: 79.9° Link to comment
william_payne1
Day 7 Parameters: NH3/NH4+ 0ppm, NO2- 0ppm, NO3- 180ppm Temp: 79.2° Did 50% WC Built a rough lamp holder till I can get my lights found, not the best looking but it works for now. Link to comment
william_payne1
Ok light got here this morning and I didn't even know it, I was waiting around my office for UPS to come at 4:00 lol, thank you CoralCompulsion! Love the bulb! New mount will be here tomorrow. Link to comment
william_payne1
Thanks, checked water today, Day 8 parameters: (after 50%WC yesterday) NH3/NH4+ 0ppm, NO2- 0ppm, NO3- 40ppm, Temp 78°, PH 8.0 getting some algae growth on the rocks. Link to comment
william_payne1
Went down to the LFS and picked up a handful of goodness from the bottom of their cured live rock tank to help seed mine. I'm thinking just a couple snails should do well for clean up maybe a crab cause I like em. I did not intend to have any fish in this tank as a few random added feedings would do OK or do you guys think I need a small Gobie or something? A bit cloudy I just added the sand/rock sludge. william_payne1
Ok got through some storage this evening and found an mp-10, two Koralia nanos, metal halide, works but the fan and everything inside is rusted, a marine land "reef capable" led, it does well for 5gal tanks, also found a random 1200gpm circ. pump and two heaters, so I tossed em in a bucket with the rest of my rock to cycle it. Also received the light mount but it had a huge table sized clamp on it, not what I wanted but oh well, my wife can use it for her nails or something and the stand I made turned out to make a good mount for the mp-10 controller. tetraodon
i wouldnt add a fish to that small of a tank, plus it seams you have a lot of rock, but thats just me. Link to comment

I had a yellow clown goby in it at one time and was quite fitting but it didn't have the mp-10. I was thinking just coral and very small cuc, maybe a filter feeding crab of some kind. I put in a lot of rock because I don't have any sand and I want good filtration, I may take some out later but I kind of like a lot of rock for the zoas to spread onto and it's all small chunks now so I may rearrange them now that everything is set up the way I wanted. I have ceramics to add if I take out rock but I dunno yet ill take some out when my zoas are ready to go in as they are on rocks as well. I also have a tub of rock cycling so I can swap pieces if I want but I'm kinda liking it so far, the Rock is very porous and open so it's big for the weight. Link to comment
william_payne1
found some pics of the last time i had used this tank. the Duncan's are all messed up they came out of a crashed tank about 2-3days before this. i put this together with random stuff people couldn't keep or didn't want. william_payne1
So my mp10 took a crap on me today started flashing red/green, the wet side is ok and spins freely, dry side locks hard when reset, hard reset does nothing. I put my Koralia nano 240 in for the time being, I'll call eco tech Monday. I'm now running some phosguard and I'm holding three heads of Duncan's, a huge Acan, and beautiful monti that may stay... Lol, so much for a zoa tank... but we'll see, the 50gal will be a better choice I think. Either way they are all doing well in there and everything has cleared up and is running smoothly Link to comment

william_payne1
Acans looking better, Zoas are opening up looking good, I think I'm gonna leave the tank be and just let the zoas take over the rocks and I'm thinking of keeping the Acan in there since I have a bunch in my 50g already.
