Captive bred fish

Hey gang,

So...as a few of you warned, one of my firefish died this evening. It was clearly hammered by the other firefish, the tail was all torn up and scales missing. I had the misfortune of watching him die, felt awful for the little guy.

I'll be looking for a replacement fish in the next few weeks and I'd very much prefer to get fish that are captive bred. I don't know if firefish are captive bred, and if they are, I don't know if the fish I have were captive bred. But I don't want to get a fish that was pulled out of the ocean only to watch it die in my house. Definitely would like to avoid that.

Does anyone know of a list that indicates which fish are captive bred? I know clowns are captive bred, some gobies, cardinal fish...I'd like to explore some different options these next few weeks and go into the store knowing what to look for instead of going in and letting the workers con me into something.

Many thanks!

Blue Zoo Aquatics also has a captive-bred and tank-raised category.

Unfortunately, there hasn't been a whole lot of new stuff in the last few years, still mostly the same species as before. Some of the dotty backs are super pretty, don't know if they're compatible with you have though.

Awesome, thank you both! I'll have to look around LiveAquaria after work and find the captive bred section. ORA's captive bred stuff was very easy to find and look through. Plenty of options, very cool.

I'll probably avoid dottybacks...I had one and he was pretty mean. With a firefish, I'm certain the outcome wouldn't be good. I'm looking mostly at gobies and possibly a clown afterwords.

I don't think firefish have been captive bred yet. However, many types of fang blennys are captive bred and swim out in the open and won't be bullied by your other firefish. They also have a combooth captive bred too.

Three types of assessor basslets are also captive bred and are peaceful and interesting.

Check out this list, click on the images so see the types:
