Fish and Coral Behavior with new Light.

To the Moderators, I am sorry, But I don't know where to put this topic.

Since adding our new AI Prime (Which I am enjoying) Our Royal Gramma, Bi-Color Blenny and the Percula Clown aren't acting like they used to. The RG is staying on sand bed, the Clown is staying near it's sleeping area and the Blenny, well, he is staying in his "Rock Caves". They come out to eat, but are back to their "Sleeping" areas.

On the Pearly Jawfish, he seems okay. Stays in his sand bed Cave but is on Guard. This is normal behavior for him.

Onto the Coral...Our LFS suggested I move our "Red Gonipora" http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=3352+3354+3400&pcatid=3400 From an upper rock that our Zoanthid colony sits down to the Sand bed and to move our Duncans up to that spot on the rock. Now, the Flower Pot seems to be not as "Open" or stretched like it does during the day. Now, I just had to scrape some algae from the glass near it, I might have plssed it off.

Sometimes during the day the GSP colony will close up. Shar gets concerned about this..And I do as well if it stays closed up for more than an hr or longer.

Are my concerns due to the use of a New Light?

:huh::wacko:

Is the new light providing significantly more light than before?

Did you slowly turn the light intensity up to give everything a chance to adjust?

What levels/percentages are you running your Prime?

I am still learning the settings and I do have the Light ramp up it's intensity. I start the process at about 8 A.M. and it gradually diminishes towards early evening. It then starts to ramp up the Moon Light. (Blues, no White, Violet or UV)

We just got this light on 4/15. (2 days ago). And since then, I have played with the settings and I Have not gone 100% on it. 50% at it's strongest.

Going from your stock PCs (if that's what you had) to 50% is pretty high. I'd max it out around 20 - 25% for a few weeks and bump it 5% or so each following week....judging on how your corals / fish react.

Ummm, I have them scheduled starting at Midnight with Moonlight and sun rise around 8 in the morn ramping up to about 2:30 P.M

when I have the UV and Violet at 50% and Whites about 100% and then it ramps down to sunset around 6 P.M with Moonlights ramping up to midnight. I Wish I could take a picture of the Cell phone to show U my schedule.

See my previous post....I'd bump that way down.

Then, give Lawn a shout and see what he runs his at....whatever he's doing / did is working.

TY Jack. Gives me more reason to "Play" and try to learn my New "Toy" I Like a challenge, and like learning. But not if it is going to stress my Livestock.

Just dial down the intensity levels. That wont hurt what you have as fast as burning them. If things start to "stretch" for more light, bump it up another 5% for a week and see how they react.

I would also put your few corals the LFS told you to move back where they were if they were fine before the move.

I will move that coral tomorrow. I want to see if it is just "Over Reacting" to my intrusion when I was scraping the Glass of Algae.

Now that the lights have come up a little more I see the Clown and RG playing together in the water column..so, things are looking good there. :)

What Jack said. This is way too much light. Going from your stock lighting, start this at 25% max, run it there for a couple weeks then slowly start to ramp it up by no more than 5% per week. The corals are most likely in light shock. LEDs may not appear as bright, but the light is much more intense so going from CFLs to LEDs is a big change. The corals need acclimation time - most likely 3-4 weeks or more. When I switched from CFLs, I started my nano box at 20%. Upped it by 3% for the first two weeks then ended at 45%. I also ended up burning a bunch of corals still.

Jack also made a good point. If you start seeing the corals reaching for light, bump the intensity just a bit :)

TY Stella and Jack. I did see a setting for "Acclimation". And noticed the Time frame for it and thought it was "To dim" and the Acclimation meant something different.

When I set my light to acclimation, can I still use the Moon light at night? It really gives the Coral "POP". Colors are just so beautiful.

You can still use the moonlight but decrease its intensity overall for all of your settings. You'll still get that nice "pop" but you won't bleach them out. Corals can survive low light but they can't survive intense light unless they're slowly acclimated. It might look too dim for your eyes for a bit but it's better for them to slowly adjust to stronger light.

When I had my AI primes I went from stock and kept my intensity at 25% with a 5 week acclimation mode to 40%. I played it conservatively but the corals reacted well to it.

TY All... I Just re-set the intensities. I also re-scheduled the time the the highest setting was. I reduced the time from 2 hrs to 1 hr.

Will see how this goes. I do listen to people and their advice. I don't let it go in 1 ear and out the other. I do take action and at this time, I will just have to see how things are going to go after re setting my settings.

On a side note, I really need to get a DSLR with a movie mode. I will be able to post a pic of the cell phone setting and do a short movie

of the lights in action.
