Questions:

I want to switch the main pump out for two pumps. The stock return is at 211gph and im thinking i want atleast 300 to 350gph.

My question is should I go for 2 tunze 1073.008 which pump out 211gph each or 2 smaller pumps like the MJ600 which do 160gph each?

Anyone with an xr15w care to share your light schedule?

I second the Sicce 1.5 and just use the split tubing. Sorry no help on lighting schedule I run Kessils as well.

How is the Kessil and which one are you guys running? My main concern is that i just dont want to lose any colors on the corals.. I plan on housing some rainbow acans and in the past ive always lost colors.. Hopefully this xr15 will do its job.

I started with a 160 then went with the 360. Towards the end I pulled almost everything out and used a prime and did not like that at all. Check out my signature for the build and there are tons of pics. Here is one and I think the colors in the acans look good!

Youre tank is crazy bro. good stuff. When you were running the xr15 did you have it long enough to see if it was maintaining your coral colors? Also you mentioned the disco ball effect.. besides how it looks effect does it have a negative effect on your corals?

Thanks!

Only ran the XR 15 for about a day and went to the 360 as I just liked the shimmer and the look much better. And the disco ball is the colors on the sand bed you get with a lot of LEDs. Even the Prime had it but if you turn the reds down it will go away. I have a ATI LED T5 set up now on a 40 breeder and can get the effect if I don't turn them down......for some reason the Kessils are the only ones not to do that.

Does anyone have any experience with the spin stream by IM?? I was about to place my order when i saw a few reviews about them being loud? These things make noise?

Good start. Will follow.

I heard they suck. I use an MP10 and it is more than enough flow.

Good to know .. yeah think im just gona stick to the stock nozzles and and depend on that mp10.

You think 2 individual return pumps are bad? Thinking about going with 2 - tunze 1073.008 (211 gph each adjustable) Again, sick tank dude. and thanks again for the light schedule.. i tweaked it a big but it was very helpful.

They sometimes get stuck, won't spin they are ok nothing special.

I have the ghost Skimmer for my Fusion 20,don't think you are going to like it. Very erratic

Thanks jDOGG. Thats good to know, such a mixed review on them .. but im thinking of going eshopp nano or the tunze 9001. any experience with the bioreactor from IM. Do you have a build thread?

Ordered fiji pink sand, dry live rock, and bio spira to start my cycle.

I hate seeing this .. literally checking every hour to see if it magically just delivered. Hopefully Friday is a good day for me.

For people considering this tank, note that the glass does not go all the way down. the white lines are my ghetto-fabulous references.

Just get one Sicce and be done with the pump ;)

Anyway this is one of the reasons I wanted two pumps so i can have the inlet of the return pump come from the dead spots on both sides.. but maybe youre right just do the sicce and be done with it.

The MP10 is more than enough flow, I have a single Cobalt MJ 1200 in the back and that's enough also. The Sicce pump is good also.

Glad the schedule worked out okay. I have not seen any color loss with my Acans with those settings. Just make sure you acclimate over a few weeks.

That dead spot sucks but it is not really an issue. I just dealt with it. I also had a peppermint shrimp crawl in there somehow and well it lived back there for a few months until I took the tank down.

Agree, I have two hermit crabs that live back there and clean up any detritus that sneaks in, they've been going strong for a year and a half. Not really an issue since my media baskets filter out most of the gunk coming from the tank. Only issue I had once was a Goby getting stuck back there and it was a PITA to stick my hand in there or any net to catch it.

Yes I thought of tossing a few snails or hermits back there as algae grew back there with the lighting. I think a few critters in the back can help.....

Today was a good day but also a sad day. Im glad everything came on time but i the wrong sand came and I had learned last night about curing dry live rock which sounds like alot of time and work...

 i went downstairs and!~

IMG_4867.jpg

SIGHHHHH... i ordered the wrong sand!!! i wanted FIJI PINK. im gona take this to a LFS and see if they'd like to trade. this sucks. BIO SPIRA!

IMG_4877_1.jpg

Dry rock from BRS .. (looks good butttt huge mistake for me, look below and please help!)

IMG_4873.jpg

Been playing around with my other live rocks that i dried out from my 12 gallon last week. Im very proud of this aquascape. trust me it looks better in person. Should i take the dead SPS corals out? is this bad?

IMG_4851.jpg

IMG_4850.jpg

you guys cant see it but once sand is in that middle front part has a nice little pathway. its beautiful. would be crazy if my future watchman goby and pistol shrimp did their thing there.

IMG_4856.jpg

i dont knkow how im gona set up the left side of the display .. i thought i was gona do it with the Pukani from BRS but prob not gona use it.

IMG_4858.jpg

Okay so since the pics are out of the way I have some important questions....I never gave live rocks much thought... On my pervious tank i always bought cycled live rock

1. Cycled live rock means it just alive and has the good bacteria correct?

2. Cured live rock means whether the rock is live or dry it is cleaned of all previous dead bateria and matter that can harm your tank?

I will continue thinking I have the correct definitions.

3. I just figured I'd always dry my rocks before setting a new tank in case there were any unwanted critters and just wanted to start fresh.. I always grew diatoms within 3 weeks so that much i was willing to wait. If I dried out my rocks from my previous 12 not the Pukani the one in my display currently for about a week, is it smart to cure it? do i have to? I dried this same rock out last time didnt cure it and had no problems using it in my previous tank .. althouh the cycle took for ever

4. Watching alot of youtube vids about curing dry live rock... some people use acid bath(which IMO is crazy... i dont want to deal with no acid) some use vinegar and some use rodi and some use saltwater... How do i exactly cure 1. the Pukani dry live rocks from BRS and 2. if needed my live dry rocks i dried out for a week from my previous tank?

5. Im thinking about not using the Pukani and just used the previous dry rocks from my old tank from a week ago... you think i can get away without curing? and just throwing it in to cycle? would anything bad happen?

Sorry for the crazy questions.. im just getting paranoid now.

you can keep the sps skeleton in there if you want. No harm its just calcium carbonate. As far as curing cycling etc, If the old rock has been dried out there is no beneficial bacteria. regardless of which rock you are using I have always cycled in my display tank. Even when using old live rock or base rock. Some people may not agree with that, but its worked for me in the past and on my current tank. I phantom feed the tank for a few weeks and let it go through a cycle. No real need to over complicate things, just keep it simple. I am sure other will weigh in on this, but if there is nothing to 'cure' on the old rock you should be good to go.

IMO why would you want to keep skeletons in prime tank real estate? ....cause the only thing I could ever grow on dead coral was some corraline... but mostly just GHA.

Why are you drying out your other tanks rocks? Was there problems with algae or pests? If yes, then dry or not I wouldn't use them

...why risk it? Dead rock has the ability to leech phosphates...which is why people do acid baths.

If the answer is no then why dry them out?...they'll only help speed up cycling

Yeah im thinking im just going to go for it .. not the Pukani becaues it looks like thers alot of particles inbetween but for the rocks i had drying im thinking im goning just put it in without doing any acid wash or curing...

Yeah im eventually going to chip them off but was curious one if it was bad or not. I dried them out because i had to get rid of my old tank and didn't have another tank that was running i could have housed them in. Do you think i will have to cure them and clean them well before putting it in my new tank to cycle>?

I think i solved my problem ... Anyone have experience rocks from reefcleaners.org?

This one to be exact.

http://www.reefcleaners.org/aquarium-store/florida-reef-rock-15lbs-free-shipping

Are these dry? and could this be true? (quoted from the site)

This rock contains No pests, and it is professionally cleaned so no need to cycle/cure - it is devoid of organic compounds, and has been treated to prevent phosphate leaching. Rinsing rock dust from the rocks is a good idea though.

Freaking rocks man .. im buying and stressing over rocks
