Fluval Spec V Help

Whats up guys I have just started my Fluval Spec V about 3 weeks ago and so far its going really great. I think I have skipped over the brown algae bloom and gone straight to tiny red algae which has just started appearing in the back wall of the Tank...

Lighting:

Current USA Orbital LED

Media to be added when I am positive the tank has finished cycle...

Chemi-Pure Blue Nano packets and filter floss

I only have the sponge that comes with the tank in right now...

I have a refractometer that is unfortunately broken and am sending back but until then I have the cheap hydrometer to get me by...

Extra accessories include digital thermometer and Hydor Flow rotator so feel free to give me some suggestions ands I look forward to reading what you have to say...

OH!!! and the live rock I bought was so live that there was a small frag of Zoas attached, which I found about a week after the rock had already been in the tank underneath in the larger cave section...

Anyways it is doing remarkably good considering the conditions it had to have gone through during acclimation

Only real Question I have as of now is how to fix the flow problem with the stock return pump! Thanks!

Again thanks for the look into my tank and I look forward to all our advice!

Using the same pump. You'll need to remove the front and back plastic covers. There's also a duckbill type lid above the intake that you will need to trim with a blade . It will fit comfortably after those mods are made. You can also use the stock tubing and trim it down to compensate for the extra height with the new pump.

As far as the lighting ratio, you're going to have to do your own testing. I'm not sure how the fixture adjustments work, but you can use your zoanthids for a test object. If you notice that the stems of the zoanthids begin to grow as they sit on the sandbed, as if their necks are getting longer, then you need more light, which means ramp up the white or move the coral up. Fine tune and go from there

So I have full control of both white and blue light with the fixture so I can have 100% white all the way down to 0% and the same goes for Blue light 100% all the way down to 0%

Gotcha. With that said, still use the method described above. You can probably keep blues at 100%, and whites around 40-50 for the time being. See how your zoanthids react and adjust whites accordingly.

Whats up guys! Just wanted to do a quick update...

New Accessories:

Aqueon 600 installed

Media Basket installed

I had to chop up the Aqueon 600 pretty good but it fits like a glove now! Also I have started seeing some brown red and green algae which should mean that my bloom has started! So many exciting things going on right now. The hitch hiker Zoas are doing great remarkable and I think they are actually enjoying the nutrient rich system. Also I have not lost a single hermit crab yet which is also great news.

Livestock to date:

5 Blue legged Hermits

1 Zoa not sure what proper name is for the zoanthid

anyways here are some pictures!

More pictures

:P

Let me know what you guys think I still need to get a screen for the back wall and a nano mag cleaner

Hey guys I am going to post some updated pictures later today but I have a couple questions regarding my increased flow rate.... I am having some trouble keeping the water level in the media area stable especially over night. Anyone have any suggestions?

Your evaporation will change the water level in the filter chamber only . Get an ATO and that issue will go away

Hey, we have very similar setups. Interested to see what you end up doing with your tank. Going to follow along. Cheers

Tank looks good.

I was going to advise changing the pump for flow but thats an issue gone:)

Its quite amazing the transition you will see in the tank.

My only advice is ditch the filter sponge. They are nitrate factories even when cleaned/replaced.

You can use floss and replace it weekly, its cheaper too.

Thanks for all the love guys!!!

Posting a couple pictures tomorrow... Just got home from a business trip and left the tank in the hands of my GF  but everything seems to be perfect (SHES AWESOME!). The only real change is a snail that made the jump from my tank to the FUGE!!! No idea how that little bugger got in there haha. Water parameters are doing great and overall the tank is cruising right along!

Sponge was ditched about 2 weeks ago!! Nitrate levels have been very low especially since running chemi pure blue and my kick ass fuge! Thanks for the advise anyways! I will never turn down free advise!

So I woke up this morning around 8am to get ready for work and heard a gurgling sound coming from my aquarium.. This will now be my new alarm on my phone to wake me up in the morning because it was as if I took 3 shots of espresso and jumped out of bed and was at my tank in 2 shakes of a lambs tail. Water was EVERYWHERE... apparently my HOB fine refugium decided to tip backwards just enough for the flow to go out the back and not into my tank.. Being the hobbies that I am of coarse I did not have the weak air pump for the huge but the upgraded return pump... The equated to about a gallon+ of tank water all over my living room floor... omgomgomg yup... so I firstly unplugged the main return pump which was spitting air and then my huge pump and grabbed the trusty beach towels and started mopping... To make matters worse I was going to post about my new additions to the tank today and luckily they are still alive but seriously this couldn't have happened at a worse time... :(

post-91150-0-08296100-1476052588_thumb.jpgCouple of upgrades/updates to the Fluval Spec V :)

Couple new colonies of zoas

Toadstool Leather....

Glued GSP to back wall and have seen great growth

Added 2 Fish ... 1 Tail Spot Blenny who has THRIVED and loves the holes in the rock to the left of the image... unfortunately lost the micro midnight percula clown after a couple months from death by suicide (JUMPER)

5 Snails and a MASSIVE outbreak of copepods and amphipods

The refugium has done an amazing job of not only increasing the amount of water in the tank but also by growing macro algae that has been a great host for the pods...

feel free to ask questions and I will do my best at answering everything I can

OH OH OH and I ordered a small Acan frag from World Wide Corals based out of Orlando Florida... Cant wait to get the frag and write a review on the process!!! Check them out here !!!

Enjoy the rest of the weekend everyone!!!!
