A+ - Marine Depot's New Frozen Food Shipping

Hi all - I recently ordered some frozen food from Marine Depot. In true Marine Depot fashion, these were packed PERFECTLY! I've ordered frozen food online from other vendors in the past and it has always been hit or miss whether they actually arrive still frozen. Well, these were still frozen - rock solid frozen. Marine Depot uses dry ice to pack their frozen food for shipping and it worked perfectly. The shipping cost is reasonable as well since using dry ice eliminates the need for overnight shipping.

Good job, Marine Depot!!!!

I love marine depot, I have never had any problems with their shipping and everything I have ever order always arrived without damage. I always buy from them first if they have what I am looking for. Good to hear that the frozen food is a good buy too. I never ordered frozen foods online before but might give it a chance now. My lfs doesn't carry everything I wish they had..

I have actually been wanting to try the "soft freeze" foods. Maybe ill order some.

I have the some of the soft freeze foods by v2o. The mini mysis and reef caviar, fish and coral eat it up great. Plus its ready to use, but curious how it doesn't freeze solid.

That's exactly what I tried! The V2o soft freeze. Along with some frozen cyclops and other stuff.

How did you like it? A whole cube of frozen foods are far too big for my little tank and it is such a nuisance breaking them in half.

Also, does this stuff sink?

Mine came with a little scoop and you just add what you want. It sinks and mixes through the tank quickly

I actually haven't tried it yet. Just literally got it an hour or so ago. I did try a cube of cyclops though. I'm planning on trying the V2o in a bit for my 12. That's the exact reason I got it - I don't want to use a full cube in the 12 gallon and breaking them up is definitely a pain. Even that tends to be too much for my 12 as I only have the two coral crouchers to feed.

Elizabeth - I read it as you asking if the food STINKS at first rather than SINK - and I thought well, doesn't all fish food stink?

Haha. One time I forgot to rinse out my food container which had thawed cyclopeeze in it. Let me just say- it smelt like death in my room for days. When I finally rinsed it our I was gagging. I have NEVER forgotten to rinse it out since.

 I can only imagine! I didn't dump my skimmate for over a week since it hadn't built up and OMG, I gagged when I went to go dump it.

Actually, I think I know why it doesn't freeze solid! I was talking with someone at a frag swap that sells soft freeze. Not sure it was V2o. Anyway, there's a higher concentration of proteins and food rather than water. And what they use is a brine. Since salt water doesn't freeze like fresh water does - coupled with the higher concentration of food - it retains a soft freeze slurry type consistency.

Take that with a grain of salt. But that's what I remembered from the conversation since I had the same question!

Makes a lot of sense to me. However, Dry Ice is extremely Cold and I would imagine that even this product would freeze solid.

I just used it actually. it was pretty hard, but not totally solid - I could still scoop out what I wanted to use. The dry ice is packed at the bottom of the cooler with some paper between the dry ice and the food. So it was really great because it didn't totally "over freeze" what was in there, but kept it really really frozen.

Thank you for the thoughtful review!

It is especially meaningful because we recently changed our shipping procedures for frozen foods. Previously we were sending foods overnight for a flat-rate of $24.99 using ice packs; now we use dry ice which is more effective at keeping frozen foods, well... frozen.

This allows us to use a less expensive shipping method (now orders are delivered in 1-3 days) AND the food stays colder. We passed these savings on to the customer and now only charge a $19.99 flat-rate for as much frozen stuff as you'd like to buy. We prefer you buy a lot, but hey, that is up to you. lol ;)

You can learn more about the process by clicking here.
