Hi guys,

I have been on and off this hobby since 2003. While it seems like a long time, i have also lost a lot of reefing time when i had to focus on other important milestones in my life. So i am really just re-learning what i have forgotten and acquiring new knowledge and information.

I am happy to see that the hobby has come a long way from the times when the first wave maker(tunze) was as large as mugrollface.gif

This reef was started in early 2015. This will be primarily a sps reef with nano fish.

Tank and equipment specs:
-5 sided crystal glass (8mm)
-36'x12'x11' (Display tank)
-
-DIY overflow
-1/10 HP chiller
-Tunze 9004 skimmer
-minimax all-in-one reactor from innovative marine. Carbon and phosguard
-marine pure block
-filter sock
-Giesemann T5 matrix II Dimtec 4x36w
-Tunze 6040 on wave mode

My rockwork is basically made up of resin rocks that i have cut up to achieve the desired scape.

It is very challenging to scape a narrow and low profile tank. There are many considerations including flow, maintenance, coral placement and aesthetic balance

I have gone through multiple recapes and i am currently very pleased with how it has turned out.

Fish
Yellow Tang - 1.5"

Griessingeri goby
Azure(Kupang) Damsel x 4

-superman encrusting montipora

-purple stylopora
-purple maxima clam (2 inches)

Hope the details didn't bore you guys.

Stay tune for more pictures and updates.

Cheers and best regards,
Kevin

I am a complete fan of any tank that has a white background right now.. It is the one thing I wish I could change on mine.

I really love your scape, and your corals are placed really well, it is going to look great when those frags grow in!

The white background is pretty cool.

I am glad u like it. I had both the back and bottom white stickered. It is meant to look clinical. To keep the look, i have to clean the glass every 2 days, taking care to remove hard algae and coraline.

I know the feeling. I have no background, just clear. It takes alot of work to keep it clean and polished looking.

Thank you for your kind compliment. I had spent many hours planning and visualising my reef and it is an ongoing process. I put a lot of emphasis on color balance by clustering corals of complementing colors.

Following the color wheel is not difficult if i do not have a whole bunch of corals in the same color. Therefore, discipline is much needed to resist the urge to get that extra 'must have' specimen which will throw the entire balance off.

For more information on color wheel and its application, do refer to the link i have provided below.

I am going to replace the tunze 6040 with a maxspect gyre 130 tonight. The tunze 6040 has serve me very well and i have always been a supporter of their products. Changing to gyre is purely for aesthetics.

I can tell you took a lot of time with your scape, it is beautiful. Thanks for the link, Ill have to check that out!

What settings did you have the 6040 on? I have one in my 29. Running it quite low.

I have mine on pulse mode. 10seconds delay. 3000-4500 liter/hr

The tunze 6040 is positioned at the back of the tank where it pushes water directly across. My rock scape is off wall and that allows water to bounce off the right wall and comes back in a circular motion.

I was sold a dream. I am hoping that, with tender loving care, this maxima can someday develope the colors of the specimen on the right.

The specimen on right was recently available but it would have cost me $800. Just couldn't part with the money. So i got the $64 one on the left. Wish me luck.

Updates:

Replaced Tunze 6040 with Maxspect Gyre 130. Absolutely love it. It pushes massive amount of water and creates awesome flow throughout the entire tank.
Detritus i never knew exist got kicked up during the first 10mins of use. Excellent product for my tank size,

Helping one for my reefing buddies to babysit this jade montipora digitata.
Before this i had a question of whether digitata can grow skin over the dead parts. Base on observation, it seems likely so.
Have to wait a few more weeks to know. I welcome any heads up you have experience on the same.

Strange thing. Nutrient level is low but been fighting this algae. I have added a total of 18 Astrea snails. Hopefully they can clear this quickly.

  • 2 weeks later...

In replacement of my yellow tang for algae control, i have added 20 spiny star astraea snails(total 28) and 2 emerald crabs. It is very effective and they do not contribute as much poop as a tang. My rocks are all cleaned of algae and i am very happy with the result. I will be giving away 20 of the snails and keeping just 8 since i don't have enough food for all of them anymore.

i was told this is a red planet. Got it free from a nice reefer. Looks brown now. Hope to bring out the red soon. It will be an awesome piece.

This is also from the same reefer who gave me the red planet. The mother colony has a bright yellow base with red polyps. She fragged the side just for me. Thank you :)

Sweet tank - love that FTS - got a higher resolution version?

Glad the algae issues were resolved - that can be a major pain. I think that the scape looks great as well. I agree it's tough to design a low profile tank so extra props there. I'm reading through the link on the color wheel - I'm not a particularly gifted artist/creative person (I'm in finance) but I enjoy focusing my efforts in these areas on occasion.

Great tank glad you made a thread!
