Oceanbox surface skimmer is in! This is the only picture I could get where it is actually visible. It's practically invisible when looking straight on. Doesn't get much cleaner than this. I have lots of surface residue so lets see how it does.

Dylan...Looks great! Just make sure you adjust the level so that the water inside the box is lower than your tank, it can't skim if they're at the same level.

It took some fine adjusting but I was finally able to find the sweet spot after taking that pic. It works great!

Water test results from today:

pH: 8.0

Ammonia: .15

Nitrites: 0

Nitrates: 0

So still early on in the cycle. Which is fine, considering I leave for spring break this weekend and will be gone one week.

That's awesome, it's definitely a rewarding field, how's law school? Is it tough?

It's tough at times. I majored in legal studies in undergrad so I have a good understanding of everything already, which put me ahead my first semester. We are sort of at a lull point in the semester now so not much to do besides daily reading for class.

That's true, I majored in biology in my undergrad, and now I'm in nutrition

Currently on the plane to Florida. I'm keeping the light off all week to try to starve out the diatoms. The whole top of the sandbed was black. Little spots on the rocks. I'm looking forward to seeing my tank down in Florida. I'm sure I'll have a lot of cleaning and maintenance to take care of, but once that's finished I'll post pics.

My water is evaporating at an alarming rate. I have to top it off 2-3 times a day or else the filter gets noisy by creating bubbles in the return flow. Thinking about getting an ATO. Any cheap suggestions? I've been looking at this AutoAqua Smart ATO.

http://www.marinedepot.com/AutoAqua_Smart_ATO_Micro_Automatic_Top_Off_System_Auto_Top_Off_Units-AutoAqua-CV12117-FIDPAT-vi.html

Dylan, you can run the Smart ATO Micro penny size sensor inside the box, push the box all the way to the left, there will be enough room to house this sensor. I designed with the back smoke (clear black) for a reason, so you can see where to align the sensor.

There is one small and easy modification you'll need to do, that is to extend the U-Tube about 1inch using the extension tube and adjusting the level of the box to allow deeper water level inside the box.

Ok. So the tank was a mess. The sandbed was nasty and the glass took forever to scrape clean. But the corals and fish were doing great. My parents bought a new stand and light so it was a good opportunity to take everything out of the tank, replace the sandbed, clean the glass, and start fresh. Things moved very slowly but it eventually got done. I thought I lost the purple dottyback but it is doing well. Took a while for the water to clear up, and I did a 75% water change this morning. Everything is looking pretty good at this point. It was a well-needed cleaning.

ALSO, please don't call the tang police on me. I told my parents 1000 times not to get it, but they wanted "Nemo and Dory" so bad. I kept telling them but they didn't listen. It was very small when they first got it, but it has grown. I'm going to try to trade him in at the LFS by the end of the week.

I can just imagine how that call might go.

*picks up phone*

"911 what is your emergency?"

"Yeah so this guy on Nanoreef has a tang in a nano."

"Okay sir, what's his username?"

"It's Dylan.M."

"Okay sir try to stay calm, did he make any excuses?"

"Yeah he said his parents made him get it, they called it a Dory!"

"Okay, and did he make a threat to the life of the fish?"

"Yes! He said to let him upgrade or the fish gets it!"

"Alright sir, stay calm, the tang police are on the way."

"Please hurry, this guy is crazy!"

"Don't worry sir, we'll take care of it."

Glad to hear the cleaning went well, looks great.

I took some time to appreciate the tank today. Too bad I don't have a real camera.

I am back in NY. Going to test the water today. Not much growth on the diatoms. Keeping the light off all week must have worked.

Yea the hippo and the clown are best buds. Always swimming around together.

Some strange numbers from my water test:

1.024 salinity

pH 7.8

0 ammonia

0 nitrites

0 nitrates

Hmmmm.

Going to do a water change on Wednesday hopefully. Mixing my own saltwater for this tank. Going with Reef Crystals. Then I can hopefully get a CuC this weekend to get this tank going.
