I was wondering if there was anyone on here that could help with designing a stand that looks similar to the IM but made from solid wood. I can build it just need help with a design. Link to comment

They work, sure, but you're paying like $300 for laminated HDF held together with cam locks. Most of the stands I see aren't really ornate and are very easy to replicate for someone who has basic woodworking tools. A table saw would be ideal but if you've got a decent circular saw and a straight edge to use as a guide, you can knock out a basic stand in no time for 1/3 of what the glue/sawdust IKEA quality stands sell for. spectra Posted February 16, 2016 Share Posted February 16, 2016 I have maybe 150to 175 dollars into my stand that I built for my Fusion 20. You can also just do a simple 2x3 or 2x4 also and skin it. The one I did was out of poplar with a butcher block top I picked up off Craigslist for 20 bucks. Details are in my build thread but here is a pic. Link to comment

Yes but ripped the sides down so it looks the same with the front panel if you look at it from the side. I only have minimal tools as I do metal work and not much wood work. Just a table saw, miter saw and a router to do this one. Oh and a Kreg jig and that one is the most important.... Link to comment

I have a table saw, jig saw, circular saw and a router, of course i have a drill and impact driver. I would like it to look similar to the IM stand but possible made of oak, not sure if that would fit my budget? Thanks for the help Link to comment

Dimensional oak is more expensive than line and poplar but you should still be able to build a stand for way under the cost of the IM one. I'm actually headed out to lowes in a bit, I'll check and see what either a sheet of oak plywood or an oak veneer cost as that's probably the best approach for the sides instead of using multiple planks. LeCharlesMuhDickens Posted February 17, 2016 Share Posted February 17, 2016 Oh no compensation necessary, I build furniture for a living and am always up for lending a hand or some info. It looks like a sheet of 3/4" oak plywood will run you about $50. That will be enough to sheet the top, bottom sides and back. I'd face frame the front with solid oak planks, maybe run a 4" piece across the top of the front face to match the I'm design then proceed with trimming out the vertical faces with 1x2 oak. The door you could either use a piece of plywood or frame it with solid oak and a plywood insert, depending on how fancy you want to get. The only edges that will need attention are the top and bottom, they'll have open grain since they're plywood. You can either use a veneer edging or just rip a couple of pieces of oak hobby board (they sell it in nice thin widths at most stores" to 3/4" to match the thickness of the top and bottom and trim it out with those. The Kreg jig would help, you can get a pocket version for like $30 and man are they useful. I'd suggest glueing the joints as well with titebond 3 since it will be supporting a decent load. If you don't have the jig, you can always screw and glue and then plug the holes, but honestly the Kreg jig is insanely easier and well worth the cash for the time it would save. Do you have a link to the stand you're trying to replicate? I can probably give you some measurements to make your cut list. Link to comment

Back and bottom are 3/4 ply. Stand is rock solid. Your tank is only weighing in around 350 lbs total if that. Look at this thread also it is ply with a 1x front frame. You'd just have to joint the two with pocket holes or dowels to form larger pieces if you don't have an internal frame to attach them to. Would be easier that way though IMO because you wouldn't need to use veneer of trim out anything. Link to comment

He did say he had a table saw so he could rip some edging for the ply rather than the glue on strip stuff. I just do not like that stuff. Link to comment

I dont know what to do with the top or bottom yet but guess i could join boards, on the doors i would like to have hidden hinges. Spectra do you have any more pics of that build? LeCharlesMuhDickens Posted February 19, 2016 Share Posted February 19, 2016 If you've got a table saw, you can easily cut tongue and groove joints for the top and join two pieces. Heck you could even just butt joint them and use pocket holes if you wanted. Dimensional oak is going to get expensive quick though, but on a stand that size it wouldn't be too bad and you'd end up with a very nice end result. You can pick up hidden cabinet hinges just about anywhere, some may require a forstener bit or a router to make room for part of the hinge on the back of the door. Easy to do though. Link to comment

Nope 1x4 for all of it. I ripped the front side pieces down so once the front and sides were put together it looked as if they were both the same size. So I ripped the side front pieces down to 2 3/4. Ok scratch that I remember now I miss measured and ended up cutting the sides down some but it worked out. Link to comment
