WORLDCITIZEN
Can a stop valve work for a creating a full siphon on a herbie main drain? I know gate valves are recommended but i prefer the look of the true union ball valve over the gate valve. Link to comment
jedimasterben
Anything that restricts flow works fine as long as you can tune it exactly to what you need. Link to comment
WORLDCITIZEN
Ive heard they may clog too easy but as long as I have a strainer on my my main drain I should be fine right? I just wouldnt want to re-plumb if i don't have too Link to comment
jedimasterben
I don't know how a gate valve would be less likely to clog than a ball valve would be, as the orifice would need to be the same size to restrict flow to the same volume. Link to comment

Agreed if something was to clog one it would certainly do it for both.. Luckily snails are easly flushed by opening the valve. I've had better experience creating it by having a valved drain and controlled return by valve or dc pump. Link to comment
JoeNobody
Ball, gate, and stop valves are all very different. A stop valve is not a straight through like the gate or ball. It is meant to be completely open or closed. Adjustments are not impossible with a ball but even with a gate the Herbie is very sensitive. Ace hardware will not stock one but can have you one in a couple of days for about $12. The beauty of the gate or ball is that if something does clog, just open it completely and flush it out.
