Deep blue12x12x12

Not really a beginner but have been out of the scene for a few years and I decided to get back into it. My last tank was a 5.5 aga which I don't have any pictures of. I wanted to do one a little bigger, was gonna go with a standard 10 aga but I stumbled across one of the deep blue cubes.it's advertised as 8gal but after its all said and done the total volume is about 5.5 gal. I like to keep things simple and neat. Here's my setup, 2 days oldimage.jpg1_zpsrbsqqkij.jpg

Tank: deep blue 8gal cube

Filter: AC 50 with filter floss only

Flow: koralia nano 240

Heater: 50w tetra (temporarily)

Lights: wave pointe blade 9"

Sand : aragalive

6lbs of live rock

I wanted some ideas on a good DIY LEd setup. I picked up a wave point blade, it's 9" 18 1 watt LEDs . 12 10k and six super blue. I like how it looks but we'll have to see how it works

So as im waiting for my tank to cycle I've been doing some research on my light. I can't really find much on it as far as reviews go. Has anyone used the wave point blade before? It seems pretty well built and its really bright. I'm not really that experienced in keep a reef tank but I have done it successfully in the past, and at the time metal halides were the big thing and LEDs were just coming onto the scene. At the time depending who you talked to one was left to believe that you couldn't keep sps under anything but metal halides but a lot of people including myself did it successfully with t5 fixtures. I've been looking at a lot of different tanks on here and one person is using a $300 dollar kessil and then the next tank you see a 3w led. Makes it difficult to pick one lol

Any thoughts or comments?

I think you will have success with softies like zoas, mushrooms, kenya tree, xenia, etc and maybe some hardy LPS like duncans maybe even a hammer/frogspawn/torch. I wouldn't try any SPS. However, you won't know until you try. Keep the thread updated so others can learn. Good luck!

Very nice tank! Takes me down memory lane to my first tank, 5 gallon with a 20watt 50/50 coralife screw on bulb, sure was one of the best ive had. I see earlier on you were thinking about different lighting, ive seen a few of those tanks looking amazing with gooseneck mount e27 led bulbs, i think theres not really many options other than LED for a tank with those dimmensions. Looking forward to see how this tank turns out!

Nice tank! I'm setting one up similar this week.

Thanks! I'll be sure to look for your thread.

Thank you ! I'm going to stay with LEDs I just may upgrade to more powerful LEDs. I would like to do a DIY fixture with them.

I'm glad a couple people like it lol

If you used good cured live rock you might not see a cycle... you could always try to ammonia dosing route and see what happens... I used live rock and sand in my most recent set up and didn't see a cycle at all

Edit - reread first post and you said you did use LR, you might not see a "cycle" or you might get a mini one when you add your first bit of bioload

yea i picked the rock right out of a big tote that my LFS cures they're rock in, brought it home and put it in the tank, it was still wet when it went in so I'm guessing that there wasn't much die off. And I used aragalive sand

If you're able to get ammonia you could test but really if you trust the LFS then I'd say you could probably look at adding things slowly and just keeping an eye out. What were your stocking plans?

my plan is mostly soft corals, I small fish maybe. I would like to see if my light will support some sps or LPs if not ill upgrade it

Feel free to take a look at my pcio build, it is still young and I had some of the same questions/concerns... I would up going with a light after a few weeks but my lights were crap

that's a nice little setup you have. I was looking into the prime, nanobox, and a company called micmol has some nice stuff for reasonable prices. But this light I have is really bright, its not super powerful, only 18watts but it's nice

Well after another day of no ammonia, nitrites or nitrates I went to my LFS but they didn't have anything to dose with ammonia so I picked this guy up. Let's see what happens

That'll definitely give you something to work with, but I'll pass along some advice I got, don't rely solely on the test kits, use your eyes and note when something doesn't look right.

So everything is looking good, frank is happy. I was just looking in the tank with a flashlight and I saw a little snail on a piece of rock. Idk what it is, it's really small and it almot looks like a flat shell and it has two long tentacles out the front. Any ideas of what it is and if I should get rid of it?

Can you get a picture? You can look at the second page of my build thread we were discussing flatworms and there are a few pictures and see if they look like that

after a quick Google search I found out that it's a stomatella snail. Perfectly safe and eat algae

Well everything is looking good, frank is happy and my water parameters look good. No cycle really, one rock had some diatoms but that's about it. Did I a water change and threw this guy in. also have a snail and a hermit crab roaming around
