Reef Conservation Trip

Hello!

My name is Jake Schenthal, and in only a few months, I will be embarking on a journey to the Western Caribbean to help restore and help endangered corals in Little Cayman Island, as part of a conservation study with the Earthwatch institute. I used to own a 15gal saltwater aquarium (used to post here as well) and still actively pursue corals, but in a larger sense now. Ill be part of a group of students working with real scientists to monitor the reef ecosystems to protect endangered corals against climate change, overfishing, and coral bleaching.

While it certainly is an adventure and a chance for me to get fieldwork experience pre-college, my interest in this study and in the expedition itself comes from a wider concern I have for the environment, and to better understand how climate change and human influences truly affect the ecosystems around the world. I hope to learn more avidly about environmental science and sustainability, an area I am exceptionally passionate about and plan to study in college.

As a team member, I will survey reefs, monitor endangered corals to assess biodiversity and sustainability, as well as recover reefs by releasing nursery-reared endangered corals to give the damaged reefs a boost.

In order for me to take place on this expedition, I will need to raise $2850.00 to cover the cost of accommodations, travel, supplies, and a donation to the Earthwatch Institute itself, a charity that funds and manages conservation projects across the globe.

I would like to ask for your support, if you are able to, by pledging a US tax-deductible donation small or large towards funding this expedition to aid both endangered corals and for Earthwatch as a whole. Thank you for taking the time to read this, Id be extremely appreciative for any contribution you could make to help my cause.

MODS: if this is in the wrong forum or needs to be moved, that would be appreciated!

Thanks again!

Jake
