Hi there everyone! I'm just now getting back into the hobby after 4 years. This is my first nano experience, my first tank was a 150g tall.

My friend had a 12g Nano Cube that had failed 3 years ago and he just left sitting in the utility room so he gave it to me. Full of everything but water :/

So my first question is this...do I try to salvage this one or just bite the bullet and buy new? I'm planning on replacing everything except the pump, including the lights and the fans. It was manufactured in April 2008.

I found them for $200, but I'm going to clean this one and maybe use it as a quarantine tank. I know I'm only supposed to use vinegar to clean it. Do I need to wait a certain amount of time before setting it up after that?

After rinsing, there's nothing more you need to do as far as safety is concerned with vinegar. \

Personally, I'd use this tank, but clean it a little differently. I'd fill the tank up outside and add some muratic acid and let it sit for a few days. You're either going to need to scrub a whole lot or use 10 gallons of undiluted vinegar if you want this thing clean any time soon. Muriatic acid is so much better when you're dealing with something that needs this much work. Just pay attention to the safety precautions on it and definitely don't take a breath of undiluted muriatic acid.

Rinse the tank to get any loose stuff out then fill it with water and add a couple of cups of vinegar or more if you like. Turn on the pump and let it run for a day. After that just drain it and scrub it down with a plain magic eraser just make sure there's nothing under the eraser when you clean the glass or else you'll end up with scratches. Rinse it out one more time and you should be good to go. With the lights you could take them apart and clean the insides to remove dust and replace the fans and get new PC bulbs, If not ditch those lights and get a retrofit led kit or one of the many Led systems.

And you can reuse the rock but you'd have to clean it. I would just get some new stuff.

Thank you so much for the replies. I probably should have just bought a new one but this one seemed cheaper until I decided to change most everything. I ordered all new filter media, lights and fans. Checking the pump today. Cleaned the tank and it's holding water well. It actually cleaned up fairly easy and looks nice!

I know I have to be patient cycling the tank and I've read that I should add fish before corals. Thinking clowns or firefish for livestock and mushroom leather and xenia for corals (I know most people consider it a pest but the pink pulsing xenia is what got me into saltwater in the first place lol).

I went with the same bulbs it came with but now thinking maybe I want LEDs?

I'm definitely getting new aquacultured LR and sand. Looking at either KP Aquatics or Tampa Bay Saltwater, since they are close to me I can pick it up instead of having it shipped.

I'm going to start setting up a quarantine tank for new fish. My plan is to go with a simple 5g bare bottom with a few pieces of fake rock for hiding space. I know I need a thermometer, heater, and circulator/airstone. If I need to medicate I don't want filtration unless it's mechanical, correct?

Looking good. Jealous you're close to TBS. I grew up in FL and went to UCF before moving up here. Still miss it. Since you already bought new bulbs you might as well try them out. If you don't like them and want LEDs I would recommend the single retro from Nanobox. Keeps the stock look and will be a great upgrade.

Thank you so much. I can't wait to see what he picks out for me. One of my favorite things in setting up a new tank is watching the live rock to see what hitchhikers I got LOL

Weeeeeeellllll...I installed new fans and a new light yesterday. Plugged it in and...no lights. The fans work and the LEDs came on initially, then they didn't. But the bulbs never came on.

So now I'm trying to decided if I want to try and salvage this one, or just use it as a QT and buy a new one. Of course, I'm already looking at 24 & 28 gallon cubes :/

Lol yeah those are pretty pricey. There's a 28g nano cube with LEDs that includes the stand for $350. Thinking very seriously about that one.

Correction...the 24g is $350. The 28g is $390.
