Help! TANK SIZE OPTIONS

Hey guys,

Ive been second guessing myself for over a year now and just cannot make up my mind on tank size. Yes, know it all comes down to personal opinion, but I really would like to hear a few second opinions.

So Im looking for a tank around 40 gallons. Initially, THE DOOGAN's tank and MADE IN AFRICA really inspired me for a shallow cube( around 28x28x12). I was set on that idea and getting one custom made, then I saw Cad Lights 45 shallow(36x24x12). Then I got the idea that maybe the shallow novelty would wear off. So then I looked a a 40 cube, but the dimensions would really limit my options for livestock. So last resort would be a 40 breeder.

Im really at the crossroads here, If you guys have any personal opinions, your input would be greatly appreciated here.

I know the struggle. I had bought two tanks that I never set up before settling on my current tank. All tanks have their pros an cons. I love the shallow tanks, but being inexperienced I struggle with coral placement.

I think real cube like aquariums can be a struggle to aqua scape (although there are some great ones out there) but the same can be said for a really shallow tank. 40 breeder is probably a great middle ground. The dimensions of the Cadlights sound nice too though!

Depending on your budget you may want to consider what kind of light you can afford, because this may affect the tank size as well, it did for me!

Good luck with the decision making!

How about the Innovative marine Lagoon Tanks,25,50 costly though, Cadlights 60 is a big cube not shallow.

36 x 18 or 36 x 24 are both great footprints, you just need to figure out if you want a shallow lagoon or a slightly taller reef. Plenty of room in the tank to work with but not so much that maintenance becomes excessive. Decent stability compared to nano's as long as you don't overstock.

It's a standard size: 36x18x16high

yep! check out my 40b. I love the look of long shallow tanks personally, but if you can't do custom - tough to beat petco dollar per gallon sale or similar.

Shallow all the way if you have the space for it. The view from above is awesome. The wide foot print also allows for some amazing aquascapes with interesting depth and perspective.

You dont have to limit yourself to a shallow cube, check out this amazing shallow and long tank:

I love my Deep Blue 30 shallow (12" high) and I have only one complaint: it's hard to stand several feet away from the tank and enjoy it. I either have to be up next to it looking down or sitting down, otherwise the angle is awkward.

Other than that, shallow rimless all the way... Although 40 breeder's are pretty awesome dimensions; I've always wanted to aquascape one.

lol, that's not even the tank he is selling!

I sent him an email asking if he had any pics of the items he's actually selling.

Wonder if he will answer

Since getting back into the hobby 3 years ago I've gone through quite a few tanks.

First was a 40 gallon breeder. Love the dimensions but hate the plastic trim.

Second was a jbj 30rl. Love all in one tanks but hated the curved corners

Third was a cadlights 50 gallon cube. Was hard for me to scape up high enough and I hated having to submerge my entire arm to reach the bottom

Fourth was an ADA 60f drilled for a sump. By far my favorite tank. I personally love shallow tanks. Scaping is easy, a lot of negative space if you like the minimalist look and a lot of room for coral placement. Unfortunately I had to take down due to future living arrangements.

Current tank is a 10 gallon nuvo fusion. I've learned that I hate any cube tank no matter what size it might be and personally I'm not a fan of black silicone.

I'm waiting for my aqua lab aquaria 60 cm shallow to be delivered Friday because I liked the shallow tank so much I ordered another one.

All this said, go with what you will be happiest with and what you'll want to keep long term to save yourself the hassle and money lol

I think how the overflow boxes look is just as important. I personally can not stand center placed overflow boxes. So if you are going to drop some $$$, make sure to consider the tank overall and what looks pleasing to you.

I also understand this frustration! I started with a 39g cube, then picked up a 120g “fatboy” I never set up (for sale now) and have been researching tanks for the last year. In my opinion, the shallow reefs are too shallow and most of the standard heights are too tall. That is what I hate about the 120g, I don’t want to have to put on a scuba mask just to work inside my tank!

With that said, I suspect that if you limit yourself to a 40g size, you will miss out on some amazing tanks. Personally, I’ve found ones in the 16-18” height range to be a perfect mix. Instead of a cube tank, have you looked at any of the square tanks? Same length x width, but typically more shallow than a cube of the same dimensions.

The size gus6464 mentions would be awesome I suspect.

36x36x18 is best tank ever made.

What size is that and who makes it?

You can google search for a free fish tank gallon calculator. 36x36x18 = 101 gallons.
