LED Question for a 5 Gallon all in one tank.

I am brand new to this forum and I need an opinion. I set up a little 5 gallon aquarium for the kids department at the library where I work. The kids love it and since it’s really not big enough to put a lot of fish in it. (Yes I know there is one clown in there but he is extremely tiny and I know when he gets big he will have to be upgraded to a new tank, for now I do love when the kids mouths hang open and a little bit of drool almost comes out when they watch him smile.png ) Since I cannot put many fish in this tank, I thought I would put some corals in it. I have a Blade High Output LED Model # 01407. It has 6 Super Blue LEDs and 12- 10,000k Day Light LEDs.

I was given some corals from another saltwater buddy. Two of which did not make it, and I am thinking maybe the tiny pump I have on it is not enough flow so I may need the world’s tiniest powerhead to go in the tank too. (Does anyone know which powerhead that would be? smile.png) One of the corals that died was GSP...GSP Is probably the hardest to kill I would think (never heard of anyone else being able to kill it, I was always told it was like a weed), so I think its problem was that it did not have much flow on it. It had something stringy growing on the top when I pulled it out. The two zoas I have in there open every day so I am assuming they are happy but I want to make sure.

What light would be better and not super expensive to put on this tank to be able to grow corals a little better?

Hello there, How long has your Tank been running? Actually you really don't have to move the clown when he gets bigger. I have an 8 gallon Nano with 2 clowns, goby, and pistol shrimp ,6 line, and a blenny, plus encrusting coral which you don't really want. I had a tank break and at the time this was all I had to save everyone,it has been 3 years and everything is good. Not that I would recommend doing this on your part it's just proof with work it can be done. Moral of the story is your Clown will be fine. Let tank run a little more before you start adding more Coral, see how the light you have performs it does take time with Salt Tanks. Feel free to ask questions I'll see if I can help you out.

You will get many answers from people it's basically a learning trend.

Thank you both! I always love suggestions and ideas.

I have actually only had this tank set up for 2 months. I have been in the hobby for almost three years now and my tank at home is a 40 breeder and I love it! This one was just an idea I had for the children and when I saw a cheap little tank I jumped on it. It cycled within two weeks and was good to go.

I know putting corals in already was a snowballs chance of them making it, but the two zoas are perfectly fine and happy.

I have no idea how I killed the GSP, I really am thinking it did not have much flow to it and that's why it died (I am assuming). The zoas are happy they eat when I spot feed them and I have two sexy shrimp in there along with twenty hermit crabs and four cowrie snails.

I think I may add a small cleaner shrimp and I am thinking about putting a protein skimmer on it, but I am not sure. Right now I am trying to make this tank as maintenance free for my coworkers as possible.
