Zoa rock Question

Hi, had a question a Zoa rock I purchased. After dipping it in Coral Rx and adding it to my new tank, there is some white powder forming on the rock. Also at the top (not sure if you can see) but there is also a white milky film of some sort. Are these bad and should I try and remove the stuff. The rock had quite a few different zoas on it. but more than half not opening. (this is about 1 week now).

Also if you look at the rock, there is a lot of hairy stuff and other wierd looking stuff on it. (regret not just buying clean frag plugs and adding as I need). Should I consider taking all the zoas off this rock and mount them to a clean new rock, or is it good to have all that other stuff in the tank. (newly cycled tank about 40 days old with all dry rock.)

Looks like hair algae - I'd try dipping the rock in 1/3 peroxide / 2/3 tank water for about 2 minutes. then rinse it with tank water and put it back in. Your zoas will get pissed, but it should kill the algae . I bet if you do nothing the algae will beat up the zoas. Although I am not an expert at zoas, so i'll also wait for others B)

The white powdery stuff could be calcium carbonate and therefore not a big deal. The frag you have looks like it had lots of coralline, and when you move it around it sometimes dies back, leaving this white residue. I would leave it alone, at least for now.

You should probably wait for some better advice, though, before doing anything much. I'm pretty new at saltwater. :)

Well I hate frag plugs they seem to grow more crap than anything. As for the hair algae a 50/50 dip in peroxide should take care of it. I dip for usually 7 to 10 mins. It will piss the zoas off and have had them take a few days to open back up.

Look for some Bayer at either HD or Lowes it is better than the RX and less harsh on your corals.

Nice looking zoas what were they sold as?

Don't let that algae grow. I've had zoa rocks that got almost entirely killed off by hitchhiker algae. You don't want that stuff to spread and hurt your other corals.

Thank you all.

Not sure what their names are. In my excitement and rush to buy it i dont think i asked : / but in their store under kessils they were glowing with many varieties. In my tank under T5s, they look okay but the oranges dont pop as nicely.

Will dip it in 50 50 and see how it goes.

don't dip it. you could have scored and got plenty of good hitchhikers and some limpets or chitons.

my chitons eat corraline algae and leave a white chalky feces that is blown around when I turkey baste them daily.

a good CUC will take care of the algae.

I personally have had mixed results with peroxide and zoas. I probably wouldn't dip in peroxide and if you have a hermit or 2 you should be fine. That being said, if the algae starts to take over I would go ahead and manually remove as much as you could and then dip. I lost a massive zoa colony to bryopsis a few months ago, and even regular peroxide dips didn't cure it.

Havent managed to dip it yet, but i think my hermits cleaned out the milky residue.

Heres a closup video. Can anyone tell me what the little bugs are. Are there cocopods? Thanks! (was shocked to see all these little bugs I never noticed before.. I Am just Amazed!!)
