Filter overkill thoughts

Biocube 29 Gallon

100ML purigen

100ML matrix carbon

11.7 OZ chemi pure blue

Any thoughts on doubling/trippling these? benefit or hinder? increase the life of the product?

thinking about adding 2 more 100ML MatrixCarbons

and

2 more 100ML Purigen

AND maybe just maybe 11.7 more oz of chemipure elite or blue

They real question is WHY do you want to add so much?

My thoughts, smaller tank more susceptible to changes so more filter less change as fast.

Sump is out for now, no real reason other than i don't want to install one now, I may start collecting parts for one though on the for sale board

I doubt it's cost effective, sure you can filter your water thru a 55 gallon drum of carbon but it's not getting any cleaner, ya know?

I haven't run anything except filter floss and chaeto in the sump for years.

+1 this is a "more is not better" especially when it will be likely to get changed less often - which can lead to chems leaching back into the water column or build up of crap.

Also don't forget most coral will not be happy in a tank that has all it's nutrients and chems striped out. The goal is to find a balance in your tank. :)

Yeah that seems like a lot of filtration for the size of the tank.

I don't know entirely what you plan to run but I personally run a 20g main with 50% weekly water changes, chemi pure elite changed every four months and filter floss changed twice a week... That's it.

You wont really be able to judge the benefits/negatives until you do weekly water tests for a while. That way you will be able to find out the depletion and addition rates of certain elements important to corals and certain elements detrimental to fish.

Best of Luck!

+1 to what's been said.

In my mind the issue is that it could eventually become biological media - and if you replace a ton of biological media at once then your tank could suffer a parameter spike (mini cycle). The stripped nutrients would also become a factor as well.

But also I don't think triple chemical media will result in any better water quality. You could email the companies and I'm guessing they will say that it's more effective to replace the media more often and place it in a high flow area to prevent detritus build up than to drop in a ton of the stuff.

First figure out how much room you have for media (enough room not to impede flow or create dead spots and allow the water to pass easily through the media) then decide which media you really need.

Use a small amount and replace more often. My thought is the pores in media get clogged with debris we can't readily see. You can also strip the water too much and starve corals. Replacing weekly is what I do and it works great!

The only time I use a ton of carbon is to remove chemicals (fumes, prazipro, ect).

After doing a lot of reading lately I would have a agree in this one case less is better. BUT now I am at a loss I don't think chaeto is a great addition to a Biocube. It will never come to its full potential... So If I remove my cheato, I will have this void there, I don't know what I should put in there, either a SKimmer or something else.

Why do you feel you have to have something there? I think people get to worked up on what they can add to their tank just because they can. I like to run my tank as little as possible and if filteration is not adequate then add a skimmer or more media. All I run is on my 25 lagoon is a mini reactor with some carbon and a little gfo with weekly water changes. And all is good

If your tank looks good, I wouldn't obsess about changes.

The cheato will be a safe haven for pods and brittle stars to breed. A lot of people use fuges for that reason and not necessarily for nutrient export. If those things don't interest you, then you could remove it but you don't have to add a skimmer if the tank is running well. Just watch your corals and they will tell you if something is wrong.

I personally hate the small skimmers that go in AIO's. They are more maintenance, possible micro-bubbles, and noise than worth but that is just my opinion.

Right now in my AIO, I used my free chamber as a place to put naughty crabs.
