aaron186
I know this is relatively subjective with how much rock to use; however I have never used pukani before and I understand it is lighter that other rock. For anyone with experience with it, how much would you rec for a 40 breeder tank that I plan to go coral heavy in? Thanks Link to comment
pewpewkittah
I think 30lbs would be plenty, even for a large mound rock scape. You'd probably even have some left for your sump. Just so you're aware, the rock can leech phosphates and may cause algae issues in the future. You also need to purchase it several weeks in advance to cure it. It's certainly pretty, but one of the most expensive dry base rock out there. Link to comment
aaron186
should I not get it? Link to comment
pewpewkittah
If you like the Pukani rock, have the time and money to get it. Then get it. I think it looks awesome. I just thought I'd make you aware of some of the cons the rock may possess. Personally, I like the ReefCleaners rock. It doesn't leech phosphates and you don't have to cure it, just a simple rinse in RO water. The rock looks pretty nice too, plenty of holes for corals and fish hideouts. ReefCleaners has 30lb and 50lb packages that ship for free. If you plan to go rock heavy I'd suggest the 50lb. IMO 30lbs of it creates kind of a minimalist approach in a 40B. You can check out my 40B journal and see how much 30lbs looks like. Here's some more details about some popular dry base rock and why ReefCleaners is the best. Again, this is just my two cents. http://www.nano-reef.com/topic/361087-reefcleaners-dry-rock-hands-down-the-best-in-the-market/ Link to comment

aaron186
awesome. thanks so much. I am actually doing something very similar and upgrading from a 10gal to a 40B. This will help a ton. Link to comment
Tamberav
I would order 50 lbs and plan to use around 30 lbs of it. The reason to order 50 is you can then cherry pick the best pieces from the box. I love reef-cleaners rock, nice shapes and no need to fuss with curing it. Link to comment
jolee0722
I would personally go with reef cleaners or reef rock 2.1. Pukani looks fantastic but is a pain when it comes to cleaning it. The curing time is forever and using muriatic acid burns away the rock. If you do go with pukani, you would probably use 30 lbs but I agree with buying about 50 lbs so you can pick what to use. spectra
5olbs is a lot for a IM 40. I might have used 15lbs or so in my IM 20. I ordered from Reefcleaners also and the rock is great stuff! Link to comment
ajmckay
This is 23lbs of BRS pukani in a 40br. As Marc mentioned though I would order more with the ability to have a sacrificial rock for rubble and to break up rocks to suit your ideal scape. Link to comment
