Thats some real purple rock, very pretty. What corals do you plan on having? I would think about breaking some of the large pieces of rock and opening up the rockscape a bit. It can be hard to place corals if there isn't enough vertical space.

What did you add to the water to get the cycle going? You will need some sort of ammonia source, if you don't that may be one reason why you arent getting algae. After two weeks of cycling you most certainly should have seen an increase in nitrites and nitrates. However, without adding an ammonia source you wouldn't have started a cycle.

I have the tank sitting at 80°F
all levels are very low to none at all
no algae growth yet

I did put biospira in right away and then I put fish food in daily.

As for corals I don't have a specific goal yet. Just a few fish planned at this time. But if I had to get some id get a frogspawn and some zoos and maybe a few shrooms that's about it haha

Wow, that is some reaaally purple rock, nice find lol. I was excited when I saw a spec of coralline on a rock the other day haha.

I'm curious about your in-tank refugium, as I have a JBJ 28--is it DIY or did you purchase it?

BTW, I always bring a cooler when I go to the LFS, jic and to keep the temp stable and them in the dark. :)

Aurortpa - that rock is man made :). I bought my JBJ light from amazon. I have yet to put any chaeto in the tank yet. I have not put anything living in the tank yet. Not in a rush haha.
Project reef rock 2.1 just my part of saving real reef rock

Tonight's picture

-fixed the power heads

-moved some sand

-have not decided if I am going to keep the rock this way or not. It has a pretty nice area of real-estate in the front. Ill take a side shot tonight.

-tested water still good

-still feeding the water with fish food.

Bluezoo delivery came today.

Skunk cleaner shrimp and an emerald crab. I'll buy more cleaners once I have more to clean.

I did this ghetto acclimation and it worked well. Did 1 hour each. 30 minute float for temp. @30 min remove 1/3 water in bag add 1/3 tank water to bag. @40 min remove 1/3 water add 1/3 tank water. @50 min remove and add. @1hr remove most of the water without letting touch air and fill bag with tank water. The I release the beast.

I will post up a picture of the new lights today when I get home from work.

1 week review so far... I have them at about 40% power.

pros

Way bright

lower heat then stock

great shimmer

cons

the drivers don't quite fit in hood, so I had to finagle it in

could be cooler with proper ventilation and more thought put into that...

wish it had more controllability - IE typhoon or something

I will be switching to StevesLED...

Thank you for the compliments on the rockscape!

I am very nervous that I wont have enough biological filtration because the rock is fake.. though it porous, its not near as porous as LR.

I ordered 2 pounds of LR to throw in once I get it cured.

Another update

I have started to build a Mixing station/pumping station

Thoughts is this

5 Gal bucket for waste water - marked for the same level as new water

5 Gal bucket for RO/DI water

50 W heater built into bucket (silicone) and screws

83 GPH submersible pump

  1. Thursday night before bed fill clean bucket
  2. Thursday night fill with salt
  3. plug everything in
  4. Friday when I get home from work
  5. test new water - add a .5ML of prime and 1ML of stability
  6. syphon out dirty water to marked level in tank
  7. bring syphon line from other tank
  8. plug into pump
  9. pump new water into tank.
  10. turn back on main pumps/lights/Power heads

I figured this would have the least impact on time pumps are off in the tank... I attempted this last Thursday and drain and fill took about 4 minutes.

I lied I forgot I took a picture already haha.

here are the lights from ProLEDSupply by Kyle

64 Watts - and im not kidding they are freaking bright, they could be executed better but I do like them... BUT I do not want to run a chiller thus changing them in the end.

Quick question. Any reason why I can't keep my temp probe in chamber 3 or 1? 1 I have my heater but if I put closer to the slats

I'd not put it in chamber 3 with the return pump as the return pump will put off some heat. But then I guess you'll have the same problem with putting it in chamber 1. You want to put it somewhere where you can accurately measure the tank temp - not to close to a heat source. IMO :)

This is what I did. Out one in chamber 1 one in chamber 3 and one in display. Let the results tell us :). I'm guessing because of the amount of water flow it won't really matter as long as it's not within an inch or so. I starting going back to my PC build. My computer is liquid cooled, the liquid moves so fast over the hot parts that the temps is even everywhere at all 5 test spots. 34 degrees Celcius

Update:

Day 1 I added BioSpira

Day 2-8 I added recommended dose of Stability to the tank

Like the directions say its ok to stock your tank with biospira and stability. shrimp and a crab in the tank doing great.

2 days ago had some diatom on my powerheads... and 1 or 2 spots maybe the size of a nickel on the sand... this morning woke up and it was gone... I am pretty sure that means im fully cycled and ready to go.

I have had a few spikes in ammonia but nothing crazy, all other levels are great and have been great! I test water every other day.

I have done 3 water changes at 20% (5ish gallons each time)

Going to toss in new chemipure blue, purigen, and matrixcarbon on sunday.

water is crystal clear, sand is clean, critters are happy!

A lot of folks who raise seahorse fry swear by those ammonia badges. I guess when you have 200 baby seahorses in a 10 gallon tank ammonia must be monitored closely.
