rone_kevin66
I'm looking to save some cash on my tank. Right now I'm running a kalkwasser power I bought at my LFS but it's expensive. I'm looking just to buy some bulk stuff from ebay but just wondering if anyone has made their own kalkwasser like this one Brightwell Aquatics Kalk+2 Link to comment
olemanwinter
Not necessary. Go to your local grocery store and buy a product like Mrs. Wages Pickling Lime. It costs maybe $3 or so for a lb. Just mix, let settle, and proceed with drip/dose/pumping or whatever. Easy, effective, cheap, and safe. Here is a great article on dosing homemade Kalk http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2005-01/rhf/ Here is a companion DIY for a super easy ATO dripper http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2004-06/nftt/index.htm Link to comment

I know you can pick that up at the grocery store just wondering if anyone uses or makes something like like the +2. I'm using a PM kalk reactor and I love it. Easy, effective, cheap, and safe. dadummy
calcium hydroxide, strontium hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide are the ingredients in the kalk+2 to save some cash, buy some bulk kalkwasser (calcium hydroxide), magnesium chloride, magnesium sulfate ( Epsom salts). I have recently been using the Dr. foster smith, kalk, and mag chloride. I buy the Epson salts at cvs or walgreens. There are some DIY recipes for the magnesium online. As for the strontium I never dose it, nor do I test for it. I don't add any other powders to the kalkwasser, and when magnesium tests out low I bump it up with the diy solution Link to comment

Beer
Randy Holmes-Farley has some good articles on making your own two part, and the chemistry behind it. Just get the magnesium chloride through a vendor instead of picking up deicer, the company that mines the product stated that they can't guarantee the purity. Could be a marketing ploy, but I say why risk it? Buying a pound or two of 99.9%+ will last for ever in a nano and it isn't very expensive. I keep meaning to reach out to Randy to find out if there is a single chemical we can dose to raise calcium instead of using magnesium chloride and magnesium sulfate (raises chloride and suffer as well, which is why both are used, kind of balance them out). I do nearly 100% water changes, so it isn't a huge deal, I probably wouldn't see either rising for quite some time, but I'd still like to find a single chemical solution since anything I buy would last me more than ten years and trying to make a balanced solution would run more than a single component and I wouldn't have a ton of extra laying around.
