aer0
Greetings Nano-Reefers Im Sam from the far away land of New Zealand and this thread will be for my little tank, my Dymax IQ5 We dont have a huge reefing community in NZ but there is enough to atleast call it a community hahaha! I have a bigger 4ft SPS dominant reef ive been running for a few years and have been reefing for about 5 years total. Anyways the tank, Ive been running this little tank for 6 months or so and really just ignored it while it settled in, unfortunately about a month ago I had a "moment" with a bag of recycled pruigen and knocked out the tank, rather than be put off, ive taken this as a queue to spend more time and effort on the pico. Tank specs: Tank - DYMAX IQ5 13l pico (3.4gal) Light - Micmol Mini colour Water movement - standard pump for sump area and extra 2w 180lph pump for flow Filtration - rear chamber has small custom media rack with carbon, gfh and filter floss Temperature control - STC1000 controller with 55w Aqua one heater and 90mm computer fan (not yet fitted) Im doing weekly 20% water changes, weekly replacement of filter floss and monthly replacement of carbon/GFH products. Im doing fresh water top up each day for evaporation, ive purchased an ATO but I need to modify the bracket. Im making a custom bracket that holds the fan for temp control, the ATO sensor, ATO feed and the temp probe for the STC1000. The intent is to keep coral I cant keep in my main tank, my main tank is running ULNS with SPS and angelfish so i cant keep zoas and LPS in there. Im going to fill this pico with some nice zoas, a few acans and that type of thing, maybe one or two SPS but nothing overboard. So here is the tank: The tank is not looking amazing yet, as i said it had a bit of an oooops and is still recovering from that, it should be back on track soon though. First couple of coral are in: favites coral and a zoa, not yet open Ive got a fish coming, in my holding tank at the moment, a blue clown goby. once he is in the lid will be going back on, i know they love to jump. I'd also like to get hold of a cleaner shrimp but other than those two thats it for livestock... there are of course snails for CUC Link to comment
Roland-Berlin
This looks very nice. And I like the design of the light. Why don´t you use a glass cover in order to limit evaporation? Furthermore a glass cover would safe the light from splashes as well. I am curious how your reef will develop. Link to comment
aer0
Thank you Roland, the light is a very nice design, its a few years old but it works well and so far the coral seem to love it. I have an acrylic lid to use but fear with the lid on the tank will get too hot. In the winter months it will be ok but right now its summer in New Zealand, we had a 24 degree day yesterday and I noted the tank peaked at 27 degrees. I will update with some more photos as I add more coral, I have two other large tanks full so this one will only get the very nicest of the coral I wish to keep in it. This looks very nice. Gajardo
Hi Sam and everyone! I'm Cleber from Brazil and I have a Dymax IQ5 pico reef running pretty well. My setup: Skmimmer Dymax Original filter system 1 Heater 1 Mini fan for cooling Inhabitants: Fishes 01 ocellaris 01 yellow clown Goby 01 Firefish Corals Hammer Trumpet Xenia blue Green star polyps Carpet brown Yellow polyps Little bubble tip anemone PS: I don't know how to post pics here:( Can anybody help me? aer0
Greetings Gajardo, tank looks good!, you should start a pico thread too The DYMAX picos are not very common but they are nice little all in one tanks. It got very hot in New Zealand today, my tank temp got up to 28.5 degrees, i quickly brought it back down again... I used an ice pack from a chillibin, its a sealed plastic unit so great for a quick dip into the tank water to regulate temperature. I cant run a fan due to having a lid, i have to have a lid because of my goby, i'd hate for him to jump Link to comment
dropped
Looking good aero. How's the micmol going? Link to comment
Gajardo
Here in Brazil is too hot. I'm using a little USB fan for computer to refrigerate my tank. It works pretty well. I also have a lid so that I put the fan directly to the sump. The only problem it causes is related to evaporation. Link to comment
aer0
Happy new year all! Here are some tank photos, ive just performed a 30% water change and replaced the carbon and GFH media. The tank is doing well so I thought a couple of nice photos were in order. The Micmol light is doing really well, currently the peak is whites and blues both at 66% and I really like how it looks at this level FTS And some coral photos for you I also have a Clown Goby in the tank but he is pretty shy so doesnt come out much. Ill keep trying to get a photo Link to comment
Gajardo
Happy new year guys!! Nice photos Sam!!! I also have a hammer coral in my tank which looks like yours Take a look at the picture below... aer0
A couple of quick coral photos, a lot of nuisance algae still growing on my rock as the tank settles. Im still doing two 50% water chances each week with a tank feeding an hour before the water change Link to comment
aer0
Not the best photo but I did manage to snap a quick shot of the Goby before he swam back to his hole Link to comment

aer0
When it gets hot you need remove that lid We have just finished summer here, its getting into the colder months. I dont want to take the lid off due to risk of fish jumping, im going to investigate a DIY mini chiller for next summer. Link to comment
