milkis
I currently have a bc29 and it's been running for about 3 years but getting a IM 30L and transfer over all my live stocks. I'm still learning in this hobby. Should I let the new tank cycle even tho I'm only putting in 15 gallon of new water and exporting 15 gallon from my current setup? Link to comment
Mariaface
Since the bacteria doesn't normally live in water (it adheres to surfaces), yes. If you move over rocks and filtration media (avoid moving over sand if you're not going to rinse it with clean saltwater), you'll bring bacteria with you. You should still test to make sure your bacterial population can handle the bioload, though. Link to comment
milkis
Yes I will be bringing over the filter medias. Pretty much transferring everything over but the sand. I got caribsea alive sand for the new tank Link to comment

And I never really liked the cube shaped tanks so I finally pulled the trigger and buying all new equipments and tank to start over fresh. Would you recommend just using completely new 30 gallon of water instead of transferring some from the bc29? I just thought it would bring ammonia, nitrite and nitrates to speed up the cycle Link to comment
milkis
I was hoping I could just transfer everything over and not have to wait a few weeks Link to comment

Get one of those bacterial supplements, and pick up ammonium chloride (Dr Tims has some). You'll be able to dose ammonia to 1-2ppm and monitor as it gets converted into nitrite, nitrate, and maybe even nitrogen gas. If you're moving water to retain similar parameters, then weigh the cons (bringing over elevated/depleted levels of trace elements, disease, pests). You may be better off starting with brand new mixed RO/DI, then acclimating everything as you would to any new tank. I was hoping I could just transfer everything over and not have to wait a few weeks If you don't want to wait a few weeks, transfer everything over (rocks and all), while monitoring ammonia. Use Seachem Prime to detoxify it as it pops up, and keep dosing the bacterial supplement as directed. It's a 'soft cycle'; you may want to look up Kat's experience with it and Gulf Live Rock. Sorry for all the noob questions and I really appreciate the help! I'm going to pick up the seachem supplements. I just don't have the space and time to have 2 tanks running that's why I wanted to move everything over but still be safe with it. I should be getting all the equipments tomorrow and the new tank should arrive Thursday. And I'm almost done building the stand. But I'll keep this post updated as the build goes on. Oh and I can't find the post from the 2 person you named. I'm new to this forum and still trying to figure everything out Link to comment

Rural
I was in a similar situation, but it was a move... I broke down my whole tank, cleaned it all, kept sand, scrubbed all surfaces, replaced 75% water. Never had an issue, and it's doing better now. Link to comment
milkis
Just an update on the new tank. It's been running good so far. Been dosing with seachem stability for a week. Brown algae starting to grow. Here's a link to the build thread http://www.nano-reef.com/topic/367727-my-innovative-marine-30-gallon-long-build/ Link to comment
