Handy dandy formula for fixing hypersalinity

I've been using the following formula to adjust my salinity level, and I thought that others might find it useful as well. Enjoy! :)

EDIT: As Andreww wisely pointed out, change your salinity SLOWLY to ensure happy tank inhabitants.

If your water is too salty:

Volume of sea water in gallons to remove and replace with RODI water = C x ( A - B ) / A

where A = current salinity in ppt

B = target salinity in ppt

C = volume of water in gallons

For example, let's say I have a 24 gal tank that actually holds 20 gal of water, my current salinity is 36, and I want my salinity to be 35.

A = 36

B = 35

C = 20

C x ( A - B ) / A = 20 x (36 - 35) / 36 = 0.556

So, I would need to remove about 0.6 gal of sea water and replace it with RODI to move my salinity from 36 to 35.

If people are interested, I'll post a formula for fixing hyposalinity, as well.

Interesting , although I wouldn't just jump from 1.028 to 1.026 in minutes... I think it's wiser to replace water gradually and replace with RO/DI and test salinity.

It's even worse to jump from lower salinity a few points up all of a sudden....

A great way to fix it would be to calculate the amount of salt water to remove using your formula and then get to that point by taking out a few cups a day and allowing your ATO to replace that water with RODI!
