Hello everyone,

So I´ve decided to set up a Pico and would like to hear your advice and suggestions on it:

Right now I have the following “hardware” laying around, that can be used to set it up:

5g Display

30g Sump (yep… I now it should be the other way around, but due to severe space requirements, My display WILL have to be a Pico… the Sump will be hidden away)

25W heater

400lt/h return pump (from Sump, 1mt below the display)

Micro Skimmer V2 80 (with 800lt/h pump… itºs a ventury operated skimmer, hence the high output pump to make it work)

15w MarineReefLED - Par20 - QuadSpec Mini V2

As for stock (apart from a couple of softies), I would like to have a gobby, but I would just love to have a pom pom crab in there as well…

Can I have your opinions on this? Thank you…

That's definitely interesting having your sump bigger than your display tank. One suggestion I have is maybe getting a bigger heater. You will have close to 35 gallons of water but a 25 watt heater is more meant for 5 gallons. I've never kept a pom pom crab but I've heard the anemones can sting corals. I'd wait to hear from someone who has kept them before though.

+1 on the bigger heater. You need to size your heater to your water volume. That 25W heater won't be able to keep your pico + sump at temp.

On the plus side, the heater can sit in the sump. So it gives you more space in the display.

I already had this heater and was wondering if in such a small system the heat generated from the pumps, plus the 25W wouldn´t be enough... but you are both probably right there...

Thanks for the input.

Can you guys advise me on the return pump flow as well?

Will 400lt/h be too much for the 5g display? (although the display, being 1mt higher than the sump, I suspect that wont be handling 400lt/h, probably a much less...)

I love pompom crabs. They can be extremely shy, so don't be surprised if you don't see him super often. I never had a problem with their nems stinging any coral that have been in the tank with them.
