akish5
At night I always hear a clicking sound that's pretty loud but can't see anything making the noise. I have lost 1 cleaner shrimp and 1 peppermint shrimp with no remains anywhere in the tank. And also I have found about 5 snails that have been picked from their shells .... the shells are still intact though. I think I have seen a couple gorilla crabs at night. Could they be responsible for the clicking and dead snails? What's the best way to catch them ? Should I do the water bottle trick? And hope I catch these pest or is there a better trick I don't know about?? Link to comment
metrokat
crabs don't make the clicking sounds. There is a shrimp trap available that works. Link to comment

WRX
There's a few commercial options, and several DIY options. Google "aquarium pest trap" or something like that and it will bring up a few choices. Link to comment
FlowerMama
Once you catch him put him in a 10g of it's own. They're amazing creatures. You won't regret keeping it. Most mantis close shop for the night and I hear her clicking during the day, however as soon as the lights go out my hitch hiker pistol from 2 yrs ago wakes up and is more active then. ndrobey
Clicking during day = mantis shrimp Clicking during night = pistol shrimp Disappearing inverts = gorilla crab Link to comment
jamescstein
I have pistols that click during the day. Specifically when I feed the tank or if I put my hands close to their hiding places. Link to comment
righttirefire
My pistol has only been heard clicking right after acclination. And is active both day and night. No set schedule. But comes out for food Link to comment
dadummy
find a red lens to put over a flashlight, the red light doesn't startle the critters as much. After lights have been out or early in the A.M. sneak in with the flashlight and have a look. Link to comment
ndrobey
I meant that that only the pistol shrimp click at night, but yes, they do click during the day, too. Sorry for the confusing post. Link to comment
