As the title suggest I am planning to get a sand shifting goby for my 20 gallon reef tank. Thus far it is stocked with a pair of Ocellaris Clowns. I am thinking about getting a Diamond Watchman Goby, but am worried it might be to large for the tank. What do you guys think? What goby do you guys like?

Well,

"Watchman" typically refer to prawn gobies. Which sand sifting gobies are not. But I thought that same think too.

I have an orange spot diamond goby in my 20 long. It's been in there for 9 months? I got it little, the smallest I could find before it got its "beard" the dark spot under its chin. Mine had a huge head and slender body. It hasn't gotten much long but it grew into its head.

If I remember I'll post a pic tomorrow

From what I understand, Diamond watchmen gobies feed primarily through sifting the sand. If you have a well established sand bed full of life I think you would be okay, but not a fish for a new system.

If you really want one, I would get one from a local fish store that can prove it takes frozen food. They also need to be fed fairly often (two or three times a day). I have heard too many stories where these particular gobies slowly starve in captivity.

Eliz,

I respectfully disagree. That hasn't been my experience. Mine eats flakes, mysis, pellets anything/everything. I have gone 7 days no feeding. Most the time I feed daily, once, sometimes as little as 4 days a week.

But ever fish and tank is different. So it works for me might not work for everyone

Thats actually great news. This was one fish I have been wanting for both of my tanks. Most of the research I have read says you should make sure they will take frozen foods or you will have a fish that will slowly starve.

Was your fish already eating prepared foods from the lfs?

Well, against popular and personal preferences...

No idea. I was out of town. At a new LFS, that was recommended to me, talked to the guy, everything seemed over-priced, brown corals, but all the fish looked awesome!. So I took a chance, my LFS couldn't get me a small enough one.

I bought it, acclimated it, and the next day it was gobbling up flakes/pellets. Never looked back. It's a hard worker keeping my sand bed turned.

My only warning. The sand is theirs! I can siphon and clean come back and 1 side of my tank will have no sand? The other side piled up covering corals... it has an on going fued with my nassarius snail. It'll grab the cone of the snail shell and transport the snail. Also a little rock with palys... it'll steal little frags on little rocks and decorate it's cave... when my mushrooms would go missing they always be found in its "den"
