Rduboid1117
Hi all, I'm considering setting up a spare 10 gallon tank that I have. Would the aqua clear 30 be decent filtration? Any other recommendations? The current price on Amazon is $29. Link to comment
smeagol108
That will be fine with some chemipure elite and purigen in it. Check out intanks basket for it as well. Link to comment
Microbialhydra
Personally I think that's not enough on my 10 gallon I have a aquaclear 70 refugium and a aquaclear 30 with pureigen and the pump to my skimmer and a filter sponge Link to comment
pewpewkittah
It may suggest on the details that the AquaClear 30 would be enough for a 10g tank, but personally I would get the 70 or 110. Reef tanks always need more flow and water volume if that's all you're using for water movement. It would give you more room to add media and even a refugium. Link to comment
Mazzy21
I'm all for going bigger on filtration and agree with the others about getting the larger size. I would stick with the AquaClear - you seriously can't be 'em for simplicity and effectiveness. I don't think you need a fuge on a 10g unless you are purposely trying to create a pod population to feed something, but the larger filter will just allow for more piece of mind. I also wouldn't bother with a skimmer if you get the larger filter. Link to comment
Rduboid1117
Thanks for the advice everyone. I think I'm going to go with the ac 70 for the extra filtration. I plan on stocking very lightly fish wise and do a zooanthid garden. Once I get everything together I'll create a thread. What do you all think about using just chemipure blue instead of chemipure elite and purigen? Link to comment
Steve973
I also wouldn't bother with a skimmer if you get the larger filter. These serve two different purposes. While I'm not saying that you would need the skimmer for your proposed setup, the filter and the skimmer are not interchangable. Regular water changes and various adsorption media would probably be fine, and I'm not sure about the efficacy of a skimmer sized for a 10g tank, anyway. Link to comment
Learn It
no skimmer, AC30 would be OK but 70 would be great and 110 if you have plans for upgrade. One thing to think about is if you leave the 110 as filtration (not a fuge) you can crank the flow up and possible get away with no needing a powerhead Link to comment

That for a 10g I wouldn't bother forking over the $$ for a skimmer. I'd get the bigger AC, do regular water changes, and spend that money on stocking instead. BTW - random - Rduboid - is that your little ray or is that a stock pic? I miss my rays. Link to comment
Steve973
Well, the tank will let him know if the water changes and the media are enough. Link to comment

I found the picture on google. I just recently went to the Tampa aquarium and they have gigantic rays in their main tank. I have always thought it would be great to have one but I can't justify having a tank that big at the moment. Link to comment
