Reviving the old 40b

So when I started this tank back in 2013 many of you asked me to do a build thread and I started one but never got around to finishing it due to some circumstances that ultimately made me tear the tank down. Things have improved and I'm going to rebuild her and add the improvements I was too poor to have last time.

So I've got everything set up and the tank is cycling now. I had some shipping issues the the sand and they sent me the wrong bag so instead of paying another $8 for shipping I decide to use two different colors. Here is a recent FTS (IMAG1241.jpgPardon the cloudiness its from the oolite sand)

Latest update. The impeller on the skimmer pump is broken waiting on a new one. However, the water finally cleared up over the weekend and it looks wonderful now. Should be done cycling by next week. Ammonia is almost non existent and the nitrites are up showing the bacteria is working. I'll be happy once I can add livestock. Going to start with a CUC from reefcleaners.

Nice! Love the stand, I'm using the same one!

Yeah it's not too bad. I'm still paranoid it's going to collapse randomly which is ridiculous since it's rated for 3000lbs.

For livestock I'm not sure. Last time it was set up I had a pair of clowns a rbta yellow watchman/pistol shrimp and a starry blenny.

I wanted to go with some shoaling fish this time. I'm open for suggestions however. Deciding what to fill it with has always been the hardest part for me.

Yeah that's the tough part. Finding good shoaling fish is a bit of a challenge still in a 40b tho. Most of the time chromis don't work out, could do an anthias or 2 depending on who you ask but those have their own care requirements... I'm sure there are some I'm forgetting. You could possibly get some of the smaller cardinalfish? I hear people sometimes have success with those.

If someone can figure out how to convert small FW tetras to saltwater that would solve our desire for tiny shoaling fish... or maybe if you live near the tropics you could snag some type of small "minnow" type fish?

I unfortunately live in the north east United States. No tropical fish local. I thought about cardinal fish but I can't stand the look of them. Too alien like. Also I hear they have issues when they pair up. My last tank I had a neon goby and he was pretty fun but he liked to hide all the time. I'd like to get a shoal of them but I hear they fight too.

I might have to resort to the good old nemo fish. I saw the featured tank had dwarf lionfish. I think that would be fun to try. However it might not be up to my level yet. I hear they are hard to take care of.

If anyone has some good stocking advice please make me a list.

Here are the areas I want to fill:

Water-column:

Sandbed: (will probably go goby pistol shrimp again but that depends on other fish)

Rockwork: (most likely full of corals and at least one nem)

Gotta say I'm impressed with Bulk Reef Supply. They sent me a brand new skimmer, even though only the pump was damaged on the last one. So I guess now I have extra parts. Also skimmer body for sale if anyone wants it $70. Got diatoms now. Will be on vacation for the next two weeks in Florida. So doing a water change before I leave and hopefully everything is ready for livestock when I come back.

The closest one is in Manchester and he mostly does freshwater stuff. The petco has a decent selection but it's over priced and not the best conditions. Their live rock looks like concrete thats been painted purple and thrown in saltwater.

  • 3 weeks later...

So I spoiled myself and ordered an Apex. It should come in sometime this week. I'll be glad to have the peace of mind. Just got back from vacation in Florida to find my tank had evaporated more than I anticipated. Fortunately there was no life in it at the time. Have a pair of Black and White Clowns coming this week as well. Plus a large coral order. :)

Here's some more pictures for you guys. Everything but my BW Clowns came in thankfully.

All pictures are about 4 hours after everything went into tank. It was so nice to see everything open right up. Except the stupid zoas they are being stubborn. Really want to see what colors they end up.

So what's the deal with the location? I'd have to say it's one of the strangest spots for a tank I've ever seen hehe.

Also looks like a nice haul :)

It is the only spot I trust putting a tank in my apartment. The rest of the place has carpet and since it's an old house some of the floors are uneven elsewhere. It's also nice since I get to eat my meals and watch the tank as well as when I do my work on the computer at the kitchen table.
