Purple Firefish or Bangaii Cardinalfish?

I previously owned a Bangaii Cardinalfish in my 65G shallow tank and ended up selling him because he wasn't active at all. My LFS has a great sale on the Purple Firefish but I was wondering if they have the same behavior.

Thanks!

If purple firefish acts just like the regular kind, they hide a lot. After a couple months it has finally gotten used to me and won't dart into his hole when I go near the tank. But then it does stay in the same area most of the time.

Btw by saying the Bengai being not active do you mean it hides or just hover at one spot? I've lost my 2nd Royal gramma just now in QT and I'm thinking about potentially getting a Bengai Cardinal instead... :(

I was actually going to get a Royal Gramma as well. If I was going to go with the Purple Firefish I would do a pair of them. But not sure how compatible they would be with a Royal Gramma.

And for the Bangaii, I sold him because he just hovered around in one spot. Did nothing. I have a long, shallow tank and would like something with some movement. Does the Firefish have the same behavior as the Bangaii?

No my firefish does swim around a quite a lot just in a small area.... Maybe 2-3 gallons of water space. It doesn't just hover it does swim around quite a bit, especially during feeding time. It does seem to know what time of the day it is because it'll go back into his hole around 11pm even if I haven't turned off my lights yet.

Oh and any sudden movement from you will scare him and it darts right back into his rock.

Interesting. Do you know if they've been known to jump? I'm also a tad nervous if I were to add a Royal Gramma to the tank with them.

If you want active fish you are best getting things like dottybacks, wrasses etc... Firefish swim but are timid and quick to hide. They may be better at that if you keep them in groups, my lfs has a small tank with about 3 in it and they are always out swimming. Mine, on the other hand, hides a lot.

Cardinals will be out in the open but they sit in place unless you are feeding the tank.
