Running Skimmer Deeper

I've got a vertex omega 130 on my 20L (35ish total volume) and since right now there's really not a lot of bioload (lost most to 1.5 years of bad tank sitting) its even more ridiculously overpowered than it normally would be. Right now to get the bubbles up to the neck and it actually skimming consistently, I have to have the standpipe almost closed at its current depth of 7in, which is what I've seen recommended for this skimmer. I'm thinking of taking the little stand out and letting it sit deeper at around 9.5" so that I don't have to put as much head pressure onto the pump. Will lowering it adversely affect its performance in my current use case? Or will it just help raise the water level inside?
