JavaJacketOC
Anyone familiar with this species and have the scientific or common name for it? A LFS had several flashers and fairy wrasses but only 2 of these. I probably shouldn't have bought them without knowing what they are but they were hanging out together and went after pellets so I decided to take a chance. They were selling them as filamented flashers but the guy said they didn't look like any of the others that came in as filamented. A couple things that stood out to me about these vs. the other flashers they were with is: Moon shape of the tail, inverted crescent. The tails are purple but the edge of them is yellow...kinda hard to see in this pic because it's all flared out Relatively uniform reddish orange with faint blue/purple striping No long spines on the top fin (although could be females or young) The orange banding is from when I put them in the QT tank. The other one didn't freak out like this one did but the banding went away after a few min. They're about 2.5" Link to comment
JavaJacketOC
They both just ate reef pellets and the larger of the 2 went to town. Got a little better picture, they've swimming around and appear less stressed all things considered Link to comment
JavaJacketOC
Pretty little guys. Thanks, pretty sure they're Paracheilinus angulatus Angular/Royal Flasher Wrasse...in which case it looks like 2 boys Link to comment

JavaJacketOC
Will one turn, or no? If they're both terminal, no. They both look terminal from the pictures of other males but if one is initial some of them can change back to female. I'm having trouble finding a picture of a female or a pair. I may have found a picture of a trio and the females look nothing like these 2. Link to comment
Chris!
Yes they are Royal Flashers. Here is one I had before: They are both male that you have now and won't likely revert back. If they are going to your 70 you should be ok adding them together tho really, they aren't overly aggressive and you will likely get to see them actually "Flash" quite a bit, and alot more then if you only had one. Make sure you have a screen if you don't already. Link to comment

I really want a pair of flashers, I actually found someone local who is going to come pick up one of these two on Saturday, I just don't want to have to worry about aggression. I'm going to head back to the LFS and see if they have any females (pretty sure they don't but I found a pic of a harem so I know what to look for now). Sadly the females are just bland but the males are so pretty IDC. You didn't happen to have a pair and can share a picture of your female, did you? Link to comment

They will provide much more entertainment then a m/f will and a f will very likely turn male anyways in time. I have not had a pair of the royals but I have had pairs of multiple other wrasses and more often then not will end up with multiple males over time. The flashing isn't really aggression and you will likely have minimal aggression with them being added at the same time anyways. Flashers/ fairies aren't overly aggressive towards each other IME to be concerned especially if your not already having any issues. If you added a female to a group of males then possibly but adding males hasn't been much of an issue for me, if you add more down the road turn the lights off for the day, add the fish and turn lights back on the next day. Ok, I will keep that in mind, the local person already paid me so I don't want to back out on him. I'll live with a single male if that's all I get. They had a bonded pair of Hawaiian Flames that I had to tell myself no to about 10 times...270.00 for the pair but gorgeous. Link to comment

Understandable. 1 is better then none atleast lol Not a horrible deal honestly, I've seen just a male go for up to 300 no problem, they are very beautiful especially once they get settled in and aren't stressed out Link to comment

If its something you can swing and you like them I wouldn't blame you one bit. I am considering trying to source a small harem of flames, rhomboids or something myself. Link to comment

I doubt they'll still be there when I go back but if they are..... Link to comment
1.0reef
You can add the smaller male first and put the larger one (If there's a size difference) in an acclimation box to see if there's any aggression. Also if you want flame wrasse, get female. Males don't ship as well. Link to comment

Get there when they open, that is a steal! lol You can add the smaller male first and put the larger one (If there's a size difference) in an acclimation box to see if there's any aggression. I'd just be careful though. The other thing with flame wrasse is that many people buy pairs and the female becomes male even with an existing male, plus males cost far more. Link to comment
tautog83
i had a pair of flame females for over a yr and they never changed Link to comment
