Wow, I'm so stupid.. I read the description in your link and see that the floss is recommended to be placed white side up. I have always ran mine blue side up like an idiot.. I guess I didn't pay attention to what side was more compact for the smaller particles.

DUH!

hey steve, curious, is your floss considered poly filter? I keep reading poly floss may remove metals and impurities in tech M and that it should be removed while doing a tech M bryopsis treatment (as everyone believes its one of these impurities or metals that causes it to help/work). Does your filter floss remove impurities and metals like other poly filters are advertised to do as well as remove particulate matter. I use your floss but I wasn't sure about this specifically, and I just started a tech M treatment. to play it safe I did remove it, but figured I would ask here.

thanks! and happy thanksgiving!

white side up.

If it's not broke don't fix it but yes white side up. The blue is more compact but the water has to travel through it all so whatever. The other benefit of having the white side up is you can see much more easily when it needs to be changed.

Double bonded blue/white poly filter.

I've never heard that before. It catches fine detritus, I am unaware of how large the metals are in Tech M and sorry can't say for sure if you should remove it during treatment. It's a liquid so they must be very small.

Depending on how long that treatment is and the experts say to remove it than do so. Just clean any rear chambers afterwards as you will have accumulated detritus that filter floss would have protected against.

thanks fo rthe info! yea I had never heard it either, and I wasn't sure if it was referring to specific brands of poly filter that are advertised to remove certain things (nitratres, ammonia, metals)... the word poly filter is very non specific as there is a brand called Poly Filter and than there is your product and many others which are just some type of poly/plastic fabric. from marine depots description of poly filter (but this is the brand name poly filter:)

The POLY-FILTER is for filtering and purifying both fresh and salt water aquariums. It is a formulation of a special patented material bonded to a synthetic matrix. By means of a unique proprietary process, the POLY-FILTER is made impervious to salt and is also organic loving to certain materials. It can absorb and adsorb contaminants and other toxic materials found in nature or added to fresh and salt water with or without fish and invertebrates. Medication added to fresh and salt water aquariums for treatment of diseased fish will automatically be removed by the POLY-FILTER after serving their intended purpose before the medication can produce a toxic effect on the fish.

regardless, I took it out to play it safe, as I would hate to be wasting my time with this treatment if the filter floss was preventing it from working.

thanks!!

Hint for you, the only trace impurity in Tech-M is Lithium, and the Lithium is what kills Bryopsis. Raising your mag 200ppm with Tech-M will raise Lithium from 200 to 2500ish. ;)

Highly doubt filter floss will remove Lithium.

I know you said your machine can't cut that small but it would be AMAZING if you cut out floss 4"x4" for the media basket! Lol I use a razor and its a battle each time

Just use a scissors

Agree!! Keep it simple Harry. A good pair of kitchen scissors, or those scissors they always have in bins at the front of Home Depot for like a buck or two work perfect.

Serious it cuts like butter, jesh common core FTW.

I bought a cheap pair of $5 scissors for shipping Jeff to have by the tank so he doesn't have to run out in the warehouse or go in my desk. Can't have him finding my stash of blow.
