Jellyfish Art Nano Tank on Kickstarter

I tried to search to see if anyone was talking about this on here, but found nothing...

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/jellyfishart/jellyfish-aquarium

I just backed the campaign because I have always been fascinated with jellyfish. I know there was some concerns with their previous tank, but I think they have addressed all the issues with modifications/updates.

What do you guys thing about this?

Anyway, if any of you guys decide to back it then let me know and we can both get a free "upgrade" (larger jellyfish) using their refer-a-friend program.

Hello Tatertot, my name is Joe Turner, and I'm the general manager of Jellyfishart. Feel free to ask away with any questions that you may have!

Well I originally had a concern with needing an auto top off with this tank. With only 2 gallons it seems like just a little evaporation would cause a big change in salinity.

The second issue that I was going to try to figure out had to do with salt and recommended salinity. I know you guys sell your own salt and recommend a salinity around 28 and 32ppt. But I was hoping to be able to use my existing water change routine on this tank (Red Sea salt and 35ppt). The salinity issue is not that big of a deal since I can just dilute the water a little after I am done, but I am hoping there is not some weird or random issue with using another salt...

The fact that your website states:

You can also buy pre-mixed salt water from your local aquarium shop...

makes me thing that the salinity and type of salt are not an issue. Can you clarify?

I may be jumping the gun a bit with my 3rd question, but what do you guys recommend to use to clean the acrylic tank with? I am not sure the algae magnet scrubbers would work that well on a cylindrical tank (plus not scratch it).

Since the aquarium is run off of an air pump and the lights produce very minimal heat, we have had no issues with evaporation in these aquariums. (the lights are for the visual aspect so they do not include a lot of the spectrum, which also helps minimize algae growth) Doing the weekly 1/2 gallon change is enough to ensure that the salinity remains constant over time.

We have used pretty much all of the brands of salt and they all work perfectly. When I set up our aquariums at trade shows and the like we use the same water as all of the other exhibitors. My only recommendation on the salt front is to not purchase any of the more expensive "Reef salts", as the standard "Sea salts" for aquarium use will work just as well.

For cleaning the acrylic of the tanks in our office we use a bottle brush like this one. The one we use is actually included inside of the kit for our Jellyflap aquariums. You can pick one of these up at a local Wal-mart for super cheap, just be sure to buy the one with the softest head as some sponge materials can be abrasive if used vigorously. Something like this would work well.

Thanks for the detailed reply!

With the awesome support I have gotten so far, I am sure I will love the jellyfish!

Just to be clear, a salinity of 35ppt will not harm the jellyfish? Why do you recommend a little lower salinity?

Hello TaterTot24,

A salinity of 35 ppt will not harm the jellies but we usually keep them around 28-32 ppt, but it should not harm the jellies.

Hello Pinner Reef,

The Jellies that we use are moon jellies and they live about 1-1.5 years.

Hey Joe,

I have 4 more questions and then I am done (I think). First, does the light and the air pump use 2 separate cords (plugs) or are they wired together? Secondly, how long after getting the tank setup should we wait to order the jellyfish (in order to cycle)? How long does the Chemi-Pure bag typically last? Finally, is there any particular parameter we should watch on the tank that might have the biggest effect on the jellyfish?

Also, I was really hoping that I could use this thread to get some referrals for a bigger jellyfish, but I have nothing so far. Anyway you can hook me up for starting this thread?

If they only live a year and a half wouldn't you want a small one since it would be younger Iam assuming, and then you could watch it grow up?

I did not think of that... I guess I was assuming that the bigger ones were just "bigger" and not older...

Very interested in one of these for my desk at work. Can you link somewhere to current reviews of the system?

This is on Kickstarter so there are no actual customer reviews of the tank yet... because no one has them. They have a video review towards the bottom of their campaign page on Kickstarter. You can look around for some of the review of their other jellyfish tanks (Desktop or JellyFlap), but just watch out for older reviews because they have added improvements/updates to their tanks to address some of the initial problems & concerns..

Hey Tater,

Yes, there are two cords. One for the pump and one for the light. Since we are on a reef forum for cycling I recommend using water from a different tank - this will kickstart the cycle quite well. The CPBN packets last about 1 month - 1.5 months, and are available on our website or at local fish stores. The Moons have a better tolerance for elevated parameters than most fish do, but it is best to keep these as low as possible at any given time. Areas of concern for jellies lie in micro-bubbles in the system (think airstones) but this isn't something that arises in the design we use. Sources of that can come from dumping the water from an elevated position (some bubbles are fine but just make sure they don't get stuck inside of the jellies) or if salt is mixed VERY recently then added into the tank. (As the reaction occurring with salt dissolving can cause bubbles to form on surfaces) Just let fresh mixed saltwater sit for a day before use. Bubbles will want to go upwards and when stuck inside of jellies can cause holes! The cool thing about the jellies is they have a pretty amazing regenerative ability so any holes coming from that will repair fully in a span of about 2 weeks.

As far as the upgrade goes, send an email to me (joe@jellyfishart.com) and i'll make sure this happens.

@Hammer and Tater, you are correct in thinking that size is not an accurate indicator of age. Once our jellies get past a certain age (~2-3 months) they are used for our local custom tanks. (See reefaquariadesign.com for some of these - VERY awesome systems ranging from 100g - 8000g reef/jellyfish/freshwater) In order to grow up to their maximum size of 10+", they need to be fed about 8x a day so no worries about them overgrowing tanks. They max out at about 4" with dry food.

We are currently working on reviews but it is hard without enough inventory to send out to people. Reefbuilders will be coming out with one soon - we have already sent one over to them - and we have a few on our page from people we have sent prototype models to. (Ron Shimek PHD in Zoology being one of them - his will be up on the page soon he just sent over his video)

@BRN I hear "Living lava lamp" all the time from people describing the tanks at shows. Get with Tater Tot above and send an email over to info@jellyfishart.com - you guys will both get free jellyfish size upgrades. (you can get up to 3 - the info on how to do this is on the campaign page)

Thanks for your support!!

@KJ so the tanks flow design slowly lifts them upwards, and they propel around the aquarium under their own power. The tank uses a bubble lift run off of an air pump, so the flow is neither quick or harsh. All of our videos shown with the jellyfish in them are operating as normal, so you can see that the flow is very gentle.

You can see more about jelly propulsion (even though this post is specifically about feeding we have some diagrams there) on our blog!

Whoo! Just backed this today! Quick question, aside from water changes, what about cleaning the sides of the tank? The jellies seem very delicate and I'm concerned that splashing around in there while trying to clean the sides may cause some issues.

See above post #6, last paragraph. There is a link provided to see what they suggest.
