alienup Posted November 22, 2015 Share Posted November 22, 2015 I am starting a small (10 gallon or less) zoa only tank for my new apartment. Do you think it is better to get an all in one tank or use my existing 10 gallon tank and buy a lighting fixture? What are my options? Link to comment
Elizabeth94 Posted November 23, 2015 Share Posted November 23, 2015 What other equipment do you have? If nothing, consider an AIO tank. Something like the Nuvo Fusion 10 is normally $100 without a light, and comes with the return pump and media basket (which both can be upgraded). I am sure there will be discounts on them during black friday or even now. If you upgrade the pump and use a spinstream you will be okay if you only keep zoas/shrooms. As for the light, even the stock light for this tank should be enough (that is only included if you buy it, so it would be more than $100 with the tank). As far as I know, those lights don't have any programability to them, they are either on or off. So if you want a light it depends on what you are looking to spend. There are other AIO tanks that are real nice too, like the fluvals. But I will say, buying an AIO was well worth it. It makes for a nice clean and simple set up that is practically plug-and-play! As for the light,I'd say a par bulb,but if you're looking for a controllable light with the white and blues,your best bet would be a DIY light. MakersLED had a new slim heatsink out which looks awesome,and is sleek. I think a RapidLED par38 would look super nice. Link to comment

Nightstar Posted November 28, 2015 Share Posted November 28, 2015 Your existing tank is fine. You probably already have a heater and a HOB filter if not you need them. Oversize the HOB for increased flow and to house your heater, your tank will look extra slick without equipment inside. Buy or build a light. I recommend a MakersLED Heatsink, BJB solderless connectors and an assortment of white blue and violet LEDs along with a suitable driver. Cheap and easy. I've got a RapidLED PAR38 over a 6 gallon quarantine tank and it lights up perhaps half the tank. Get something with better coverage. Link to comment
Reefkid88 Posted November 30, 2015 Share Posted November 30, 2015 I personally would stick with the 10 you now now,and get a piece of black 1/4" acrylic offline ($10-$15) and a sheet of clear acrylic from lowes or Home Depot for like $10 and make your own baffles and it make it a all in one,cheaper and you have more room for a scape. Also it'll save you a boat load of money to put towards a light,or other supplies. Link to comment
