fishfreak0114
I got these in August, on a plug with a anothet more desirable looking zoa. I don't mind how they look. But they are growing like crazy, they've more than doubled in the last couple months, the heads have gotten bigger and thy are starting to spread over the whole rock they're on. Now they are starting to grow between my other Zoas and I fear that they might smother some completely. The other ones the came with are barely visible now. Are these Zoas or some kind of invasive paly? Are they going to take over? Should I try to get rid of them? Thanks in advance ? This pic is from just after I got them. They are the more ugly large ones. Link to comment
metrokat
Those are the lovely sea foam palys. Invasive. Link to comment

fishfreak0114
Should I try to get rid of them? Only problem is they have spread onto the rock. Would Joe's juice or similar work? Hot vinegar? Bummer that they are invasive, I hate killing things. Plus one has two heads off one stalk which is neat Link to comment

fishfreak0114
Maybe that's why my watermelons weren't looking to good, the Palys just reached them Are these poisonous? Link to comment
Tamberav
It's too bad they are such aggressive growers, under the right lighting, they are pretty ````````````````````````````````````````````i`mo. ^ cat sat on keyboard for her input. Translation = feed me Link to comment

Super CatPig
So is this a paly or Zoas? zoas - palys are usually like twice the size w/ longer stringy skirts Link to comment
fishfreak0114
Tomorrow if I remember I'll add a pic of how much they have spread. So if I'm going to eradicate these, what would the best way to go about it be? I don't want to risk nuking my tank or anything. If I glued them shut would they die without releasing toxins? I would frag these and try to give them away, but I have frags of nicer Zoas that I can't get rid of, gotta love living in a tiny town with almost zero reefers. Link to comment
ndrobey
They do have palytoxin, so precautions are necessary. Remove the frag they are on to get rid of most of them. Gently poke the others to close them, then super glue them shut. Link to comment
fishfreak0114
The only problem with removing the frag is that there are some nice Zoas in the middle that I still want, should I try to frag the good ones out of the middle, then get rid of the ceramic disk? I'd guess that only around half of the green ones are on that plug. Should I try to cut them off the rock too? And glue any I can't get shut? Link to comment
fishfreak0114
I glued quite a few palys shut today so my good zoas could see the light for a change. I was shocked to see how many were covered, they definately don't look as nice as when I got them . I missed a couple that are right in the way of the nice ones, would it be ok if I glued a few more tomorrow? If I glued them all shut would they just melt away? I put in an extra chemipure because I figured the palys would be pissed. Side view Front view Link to comment
Steve973
Whether they are called palythoa or not, the only way that you're really going to be able to tell is if they are growing on or near some substrate. Palythoa incorporate substrate into their stalks, where zoanthids do not. Link to comment
