Noisy Aquaclear 110

Hello.

i bought a used aquaclear 110 and it sounds very rattly when i plug it in. i checked the impeller and thought the guy before me used an impeller from a smaller aquaclear because it looked like it fit too easily in. i bought a new impeller from amazon and its the same size as my original.

im still getting a really rattling noise and not sure what could be causing it or how to fix it.

the water seems to flow well...

any ideas are welcome!

take the pump off the ac110 and remove the impeller. see if there is any debris inside the hole for the impeller. if not shake the pump to see if there is something loose inside the pump housing.

Take the lid off. Many times the lids rattle especially if intake pipe isn't pushed down all the way. Also there is known issues with rattling coming from the impellers due to the play the white plastic piece with fins has on the impeller. I have seen some diy fixes on YouTube to remove the play/slight movement from the impellers

thanks guys, i had the lid off most of the time, im sure its in the motor. ill look up the youtube fixes. when i removed the impeller, i looked in and there was nothing visible. the metal shaft seems to sit in place fine, although i did try to have it slide in more, but it basically just sits there on the center dimple. maybe something got stuck directly in there? Ill run it some more when i get home to see if it breaks in a bit and silences. ill try to post a small vid of the sound as well.

How long was the AquaClear sitting around dry before you got it? Mine rattled for a while after I purchased new. Remove every piece and rinse it out with clean water. Also, I remember I had a bit of sand that got caught into the first chamber between the plastic piece and the outside, once I cleaned that out it wasn't too bad.

not sure how long it was dry. i did just find a youtube link showing someone adding some vaseline to the impeller magnet and shaft. unless anyone here says im crazy for trying to add that to the tank, ill give it a go. still watching videos. maybe ill just run it for a while to get it back in the swing of things in case it was sitting too long.

edit: also this video shows the impeller shaft being unevenly worn so maybe ill check that part as well. though, if i need a new motor this thing will end up costing as much as a new one... lol try and save a penny...

It could be the metal shaft. If there is any wear on the shaft or if it isn't perfectly true, it can cause a rattling sound from the impeller not rotating perfectly around it.

Edit: Just saw you said the same thing above, haha sorry.

lol. no prob. well... i got back and the shaft looks straight but there is wear on either end making look like a Q-tip of sorts. Not a lot of wear, but i can see and feel it on both ends.

ima try to lube it up then go ahead and order the shaft if that doesnt work.

might as well make the fuge mod and spray the case while i wait.

ok. so new impeller and impeller shaft and im still rattling. it sounded less loud with the new shaft but still WAY too loud. Can anyone with one of these tell me how far the impeller shaft goes into the motor? my last thought would be that there is something plugging the shaft and keeping it from going in all the way. the shaft is not flush with the top of the impeller when seated.

It's not supposed to be flush with the motor or the impeller. They both stick partially out of the motor. Have you taken the entire thing apart, piece by piece and cleaned it? It's probably some sand or small rock stuck in a corner somewhere or just needs to be broken in again. The noise on my AquaClear was resolved when I took it apart and scrubbed it clean, there was a little bit of noise after cleaning. But within a week or two I didn't hear anything. My tank is right by my bed too.

thanks, i guess next will be a vinegar bath and a toothpick scraping. the thing is so clean, i didnt really think i had to clean it, but i bet its some funk stuck hard in there...
