This is the Reefing Police, what seems to be the problem?

Lmao, I am a white woman in distress send help !! Also all fish are dying and they don't seem to be getting along with with my gerbil.

I'm sorry. I hit send too soon, then tried to edit, giving every little detail and the battery on my phone died, so I lost it all. I came here in a mad dash of hope, but it's too late.

Long story short, I've spent the past year and half setting up my first nano reef tank. I spent weeks doing research for every decision I made, and luckily, the owner of my local LFS is a marine biologist, so he has been a great help as well. I've always purchased RO/DI water from this LFS. After I was finally finished with the aquaskaping and coral selection and arrangement, I had learned enough about the hobby that I managed to maintain perfect homeostasis for several weeks in a row and my coral was thriving. My job requires me to be on call 24/7 and I'm a full-time graduate student so I started buying my saltwater pre-mixed at the LFS. Several weeks ago I went to purchase one bucket of premixed saltwater and one bucket of pure RO/DI water. It was a new person working but I didn't give that a second thought. I did notice that it took him an unusually long time. Either way, I keep my salinity between 1.023-1.024. The LFS always has a perfect salinity of 1.021, so I used the pure RO/DI to top off water that had evaporated, and adjusted the salinity when it started getting too high. What I didn't know was that I had come home with two buckets of saltwater that consisted of a salinity level that my hydrometer could not even register. I stopped checking the salinity of my water when I topped it off once I got a sense of how quickly my water was evaporating due to my quad T5 lighting, and began to only measure salinity before and after water changes. I will admit, once I got comfortable, I measured water parameters including salinity less frequently but no less than every other change. I started noticing my coral wasn't looking well. I started getting bubble algae, cyano, and aiptasia. By the time I realized that what I thought was fresh RO/DI water was heavy saltwater, it was too late. Luckily I still have my clownfish and yellowtail damsel. There's some hope of saving my Colt Coral and maybe a few mushrooms. I may be able to frag a piece of a few others here and there, but honestly I'm too disgusted to even try at the moment. I realize this was really my own fault for 'assuming' consistency with my LFS and not checking my salinity more frequently, but beating myself up isn't doing anything to help me out at this point.

I'm trying to stay positive, but I've literally lost thousands of dollars and feel like so much time and effort has been wasted. Of course I will get some fresh RO/DI water and start to reduce the salinity. I do have one question. I understand that fast changes in parameters (like the unfortunate spike of salinity I've just experienced). But I do have a question or two- would the spike in salinity cause the recent cyano outbreak that I've had (and continues to get worse), bubble algae, and aiptasia and majano? My parameters look good except for slightly elevated phophates and calcium. Finally, I am far too disappointed to go through the process of selecting one coral after another and reading for days to make sure I'm taking care of it to plan to start over. Does anyone have suggestions for a nice coral or anenome that would be pretty, easy to care for, cover all this depressing dead coral, and a happy place for my clownfish and damsel?

I hope you'll excuse me in that I don't find the humor. This is terribly insulting and inappropriate. Do you think before you speak?

Please tell me how this comment is appropriate? Is this a deliberate attempt to be rude?

You might want to go back and read your first post and the lack of follow up for a few hours. I've read your explanation now after the fact, but that post was perfectly appropriate response to what you posted at the time.

Sorry Jbrock, I don't believe they meant to insult, it was just a light hearted joke since the original post did not contain a question. I understand that you're upset, there's nothing worse than a tank crash.

I might want to? Really? If you read my explanation then you should understand that I have no need to. Inconsiderate comments that have the potential to upset someone or kick them when they are down is never 'perfectly appropriate', regardless of the situation. If you don't understand that, you might want to read about netiquette. It sounds like a concept you are unaware of and one you really should learn about.

Furthermore, 911 suggests an emergency. Most people trying to deal with an emergency aren't necessarily able to meet the deadline for what you consider to be 'appropriate at the time'.

Listen jbrock there is no reason to take your upsetting loss in your saltwater life and sprial it into a troll rant on a community that has as you've said in your first comment in this thread given you such good advice. No one is trying to make the loss of your coral a joke and being that there wasn't enough information to respond with an appropriate etiquette you should just focus on the what can I do now and not dwell on jokes made with no intention to harm. Things happen in this hobby to everyone and I'm sure had they known your situation those jokes would not have been made. Sorry for your loss and hope the tank has a speedy recovery.

Have you never seen scary movie ? It's a comedy.

Also forgot to add, sorry if I insulted you, but seriously if that upsets you then you should probably not go on the Internet.

$50 says Jbrock183=Justfishing189=ruckus16=Camarokid518=troll

He has another name too that I couldn't find. Dude just talks back and forth between his multiple personalities to boosts posts then starts a thread like this.

Can I get an IP address cross reference?

Right moving away from the fact your pissed off things have gone wrong and your first half a post caused some people to respond in the light hearted way I have come to expect from this supportive community on this forum and you have taken offence as you have already said your pissed off with yourself for letting this happen and it's a chance to let some of that anger off on others.

What I gather has happened is your salinity has slowly crept up over a period of time and caused the loss of some stock.

You can save this by slowly reducing the salinity over a week or so (how high is it?) to your normal levels and as it sounds like you mostly have softies i think you'll be surprised how much recovers and has survived.

As for your algae outbreak, that's probably due to excess nutrients released by the stock you have lost during this issue. The parameters are reading good as the algae is consuming all the nutrients masking the high levels from your tests. Once things stabilise and you remove any obviously dead things the algae will starve it's self out and slowly go away as happens during the first phases of a tank cycle.

As for your pest anemones, they will have come in on a frag or your rock when you first setup and now either become big enough to see or moved to somewhere you can see. This salinity issue has not made them appear. You will have to treat them as we all do with either aiptasia x or similar, I'm having success with lemon juice (I have a major infestation) or clean up crew such as peppermint shrimp if you can find some that will eat aiptasia.

No. I haven't seen it. And it's nothing short of ignorance on your part to assume that EVERYONE has. By the way, if this were truly a joke we would both be laughing. Since we aren't, If anyone is laughing, you are doing on your own while being very offensive toward me. That is called being a bully. And by the way, you are not God and you have no right to tell anyone whether or not they have the right to get on the internet. You are clearly demonstrating a person with no good intentions. Can I please just speak with someone who is intelligent and willing to be nice?

Dude you're a joke. Bullying ? This isn't Tumblr. Did I trigger you, so sorry. We can continue if you like.

And to answer your question. No high salinity won't magically make aiptasia and majano appear in your tank, they were brought in on something else. Also how high is your salinity right now ? Cyano and bubble algae isn't going to all of the sudden be everywhere either.

Don't waste your time on this troll people. He went into another thread, quoted something that I said to another member a full MONTH and 13 days before this thread even started and wanted to know why I was being hateful to him because his tank died.

Let him fail on his own, he isn't worth our time .

Of all the places to troll on the internet, why not play some xbox live and troll people there. That is what I do when I have low self esteem, not on a REEF forum. LOL add me bruh. Cross Collar is my gamertag. 1v1 me COD Black ops.

This isn't going to be a productive discussion. Jbrock, you clearly are misinterpreting the situation and tone of the responses you've received, and your further outrage only proves this point. You cannot expect to bully people into conforming to your code of discourse. We all understand that you are upset, we have all lost things in this hobby. If you truly want to receive assistance, I suggest starting a new discussion, without all of these misunderstandings.
