Gooburz
Oh man what a deployment, I have been looking forward to this build for almost a year and it's happening!!! Tank: Deep Blue 80 Breeder Reef Ready, using flex tubing for the plumbing because I despise PVC Heater: 200 watt Jager heater Skimmer: Bubble Mag Curve 5, open to suggestions in the same price range that perform well Return Pump: Jabeo DC 3000 with gate valvue Sump: My old 40 breeder with no baffles, custom egg crate box for chateo and some live rock rubble Flow: Until after the new year couple power heads (forgot brand) 600gph plus return pump, will be upgrading to the Maxspect Gyre 130 after the New Year/Christmas Lighting: This was a never ending debate for the past 6 months but I finally decided on the Reef Breeders 48" fixture, it will give me the best coverage and has the option for hanging or tank mount. Dave at Nanobox was a huge help and he makes a truly amazing product but the Reef Breeders is going to give me a little bit better coverage for what I'll need on that tank. But I can't wait to start my 7.5 gallon cube back up and I'm getting one of Dave's Nanobox's for that tank. RO/DI: Already have the refurb SpecturaPure 90gpd unit and my wife says it works great, Now that I'm home from deployment and used it it's awesome! The Set up: So this is where I have a rough plan set out, I've done an upgrade before from the 20L to my 40B but now the water volume is massive. So my thoughts are this are as follows; Stage 1: Several days prior using two 32 gallon Brute trash cans to make saltwater for the upgrade so it's ready for the move date. Stage 2: Breaking down the 40B and setting everything up in a massive tote I already have for the day. Stage 3: Add sand to the new tank, get the 40 Breeder cleaned up for the sump, get it below and add all equipment, flex tubing will already be cut to proper length to expedite plumbing. Stage 4: Slowly start adding water to eliminate cloudiness, gotten fairly good at it and had virtually no clouding up with my 40 Breeder. Will attach 2 AC/70's I have for a couple hours with filter floss to help speed up clearing up the water. Water will not be filled enough to hit the overflow at that time yet either Stage 5: After using the RO/DI 60 gallons and about 30 gallons from the 40 Breeder that I'm keeping tank will be good to go to start filtration and bring the beast to life! Stage 6: Acclimate the fish and corals and add them to the tank AND NOW THE BUILD SO FAR: Today was productive, got the frame of the stand built Finished with part 1 of the stand, top is getting cut Fri since I have to be on the ship all day tomorrow Cleaned my ESHOPPS PSK-100 skimmer today, man it needed it bad! Thing is a beast of a work horse. Plus I got to test my return pump cleaning it the Jebao DC 3000 and man that thing is dead silent but puts out some flow, love the control of it as well. Lighting Test SAT! This is the fixture from Reef Breeders and Holy hell is this thing bright! Can't wait to see it hung over the tank! Saved the best pic for last, the 80 Breeder just sitting there next to my 40 Breeder, man it makes my 40 Breeder look so small and this tank has some weight with it too! Leak Test SAT! OK I lied, this is the best pic for last, the day I was reunited with my wife after over 8 months of being deployed followed by dinner out at Bahama Breeze with my parents and wife. MUCH MUCH MORE TO COME AND TONS OF PICS! 13 Quote Link to comment

joshky
Welcome home, thank you for your service! What kind of reef will your 80 be, a larger version of your 40 or do you think more of an overall mixed reef? Undecided? Whatever you do, these tanks have the perfect dimension for a shallow tank so it should look amazing. 1 Quote Link to comment

I'm still figuring out what all I'll be putting into the tank, so much more room now. Clam is a definite or 2 and my wife wants to see a schooling fish, maybe 3-4 black and silver cardinal fish, she likes those. Plenty of time to plan out the extras going into the tank, but I'll be taking it slow and have plenty of time for it now that I'm home! 1 Quote Link to comment
joshky
I do have a couple of suggestions for you. 1) Don't use the bulkheads supplied, replace them with BRS bulkheads. 2) If it were me, I would definitely go with a herbie overflow and either drill OR go with something like this http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/return-jet.htmland do the return over the top of the tank. I can't believe how quiet my herbie is, and you can't beat having an emergency pipe. Quote Link to comment
dpoltsdsu
First off, Happy Veteran's Day. We appreciate your service! That 80 looks really slick. Should be a great build. You will be really happy with the light, I also have a Reef Breeders and I have loved it so far 1 Quote Link to comment

I forget what it is, prolly should look at that haha. Yeah I was thinking about doing a herbie drain just for the peace of mind. The bulkheads do look cheap that came with it so I'll add those to my list to grab. What is the flow rate using the Herbie style overflow since you gotta use 1 inch/smaller for the main drain? First time doing a sump so it's a learning curve. I won't drill the tank because I would cry if I messed it up so I'll use that hang on return jet and just hang it right by the overflow. I've been looking forward to it for sometime now and it was months of debate before I decided on that ReefBreeders fixture, I didn't want to do T5 and this fixture seemed to give me the most bang for my buck and coverage. joshky
Bulkhead sizes are 1" and 3/4". I'm not sure on the actual flow rate, sorry about that, but it's decent enough to where I can't really complain. 1 Quote Link to comment

It's a good choice, I have it max out at around 57% and my SPS are growing well 1 Quote Link to comment

Gooburz
I have been looking forward to see this build. Looks good so far. We'll I ordered new bulkheads and I'm going to go with the Herbie style drain like joshky suggested, it will be a little less flow but that's OK to have total piece of mind. Also ordered the skimmer finally, they were sold out of the Bubble Mag 5 so I said F it and went with the 7 haha. Stand is almost finished and will be stained today, I'll post more of the pics on its progress later on today along with pics from a sweet LFS I've been hearing about that I'll have to go check out after staining today. If all goes well it will be wet by next weekend, already making water, 30 gallons made, about another 60 to go. 3 Quote Link to comment
Gooburz
So I made some more progress today, the stand is ready for staining! Once it is stained I'll mount the doors and paint the inside white. God I'm loving this tank already and it's not even set up. Shelf for the light, have to stain it, drill holes for the brackets and holes for the hanging kit but you get the idea Tank is good, now time to get a little sanding in. Best wife in the world, she helped out with sanding since I hate sanding. What the doors will look light, I actually messed up and had to cut new ones that were a bit larger and that free hanging middle board isn't there. I'll mount them in another day or 2 since I got duty all day tomorrow on the ship OMG it fits like a dream on the stand! The wife again next to the tank so you can get some perspective on the size of the monster! So I went and picked up more salt today and 80lbs of sand for the tank and some frozen food and I went to a new LFS Aquariums Unlimited here in Virginia Beach and they were cleaned out from the Veterans Day Sale but the place is amazing and the owner and one of the employees there recognized me from posts I've made from my deployment and some pics I've posted on the build and the owner gave me this little guy for free, the black and white clown!! I've been wanting another one for awhile now and he totally hooked me up plus I got a discount for military active duty. LOVE that place and the new clown is already bonded with my other clown within 2 min and eating and already hosting to my GSP with his buddy. Stay tuned more to come within the next couple days! 4 Quote Link to comment
HarryPotter
Awesome! You're going to put a mat under the tank, right? Cool little clown- its smart to get one smaller than your other guy so theres no aggression. 1 Quote Link to comment

Yeah I'm buying a rug for under the stand and then get like a large yoga mat for under the tank itself and cut it to fit Quote Link to comment

plainrt
Awesome! You're going to put a mat under the tank, right? Looking good but why need a mat under it Harry? It's framed on bottom like any standard tank. I never use on tank with frame. No frame different. I have been thinking about same size tank. 1 Quote Link to comment

No frame different. I have been thinking about same size tank. yeah the wife refuses to let me put a mat under the tank and that is true with the plastic rim it is not needed at all. So it sucks that I'm stuck on the ship all day for a duty day, but the wife was so awesome and stained the tank stand today! So tomorrow I'll be sanding the doors so they can be stained and then I'll be adding a varnish/lacker sealer for the wood in case of any splashes that may get on the stand and to keep it protected/nice. With it stained it looks awesome and I'll be posting some more pics tomorrow. Skimmer is on track to arrive Wednesday along with some msc plumbing parts and new bulkheads. Already have 60 gallons of water made for the tank and I'll be keeping about 20-30 gallons from the 40 breeder and putting that in the new system as well to keep that good level of biological stuff going lol. If all goes well I should have the tank wet and going this weekend omgomgomg New clown is already side by side with my older one who was just so lazy when his mate had to go because she killed everything and was always mean. Now he is so happy and they both swim everywhere and the new one pigged out so that was a great sign. 3 Quote Link to comment
Gooburz
Sorry for the lack of pictures past few days, just got so busy around the house and working on the tank I haven't had a moment to upload any but there are tons building to post. last few days I got the tank stained and inside painted white, polyurethane put down to protect the wood inside and out. Doors have been done too and will be mounted tomorrow evening, then all I have to do is wait for my plumbing parts and Skimmer to get here and then she'll be good to fill this Friday or Sat!!!! Sadly I'm stuck on the dam ship again for a duty day, thank god I finally go on leave! 8+ months straight of working everyday and I need a break! Quote Link to comment
